Independent MP Han Dong is looking to rejoin the Liberal caucus after being cleared of allegations of foreign interference. Dong left the caucus in March after a Global News report claimed he advised a senior Chinese diplomat to hold off on releasing two Canadians being held by China. However, special rapporteur David Johnston’s report found the allegation to be false. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said it would be Dong’s choice to rejoin the caucus and that he looked forward to discussing it with him. The report also investigated another allegation that the Chinese government interfered in Dong’s nomination as a Liberal candidate in 2019, finding irregularities but no evidence that Dong knew about China’s involvement.
