How Did Illegal Kidney Transplant Kill Umar Sharif’s Daughter?

Umar Sharif's daughter Hira had developed a kidney infection a week ago. For its treatment a surgery was supposed to happen in Lahore but Dr. Fawad fraudulently took Hira to Kashmir. Dr. Fawad Mumtaz is notorious for running an organ trade network across Punjab and currently works in Lahore General Hospital.

Hira Sharif, daughter of veteran comedian Umar Sharif, died after a botched surgery in Lahore. The investigations revealed that she died after a doctor conducted her alleged illegal kidney transplant at an undisclosed location in Azad Kashmir.

According to Jawad Sharif, Hira developed a kidney infection a week ago and surgery was supposed to happen in Lahore but Dr. Fawad fraudulently took Hira to Kashmir.

Federal Investigative Agency and the Human Organ Transplant Authority raided the house of transplant surgeon Dr. Fawad Mumtaz in Bahria Town Lahore, on the written complaint submitted to them by Jawad Sharif, son of Umar Sharif.

Dr. Fawad Mumtaz is notorious for running an organ trade network across Punjab and currently works in Lahore General Hospital. Dr. Fawad had already left his residential place anticipating a possible raid.

Meanwhile, the Jawad Sharif claims his sister, Hira Sharif, was brought to a private hospital at Raiwind road in a critical condition after developing serious complications following surgery. Jawad, however, is clueless about the exact location or building where surgery happened. He added that Dr. Jawad received Rs 3.4 million for the kidney transplant.

Comedian, Umar Sharif, was on a three-month-long visit to the USA. He returned from Houston after receiving the news of the death of his daughter.

An official has claimed that Dr. Fawad has already been implicated in several cases of illegal organ transplants in Multan, Faisalabad, Lahore and other parts of Punjab. FIA had even caught him red-handed conducting illegal organ transplants in 2017 of foreigners from Oman, Libya, and Jordan at EME Society in Lahore, charging them Rs.6 million.

A Jordanian national breathed her last in the surgery. Agencies took Dr. Fawad and the then Secretary-General of Young Doctors Association, Dr. Altamash Kharal and two other suspects in custody.

The incident had invited widespread criticism on the medical community when doctors serving the public health institutes were found involved in running an obnoxious organ transplant racket.

Later, Dr. Fawad was released from jail after he applied for post-arrest bail second time at Lahore High Court. Following his bail, he resumed his duties at Lahore General Hospital. He was again implicated in the case in August 2019 for illegally removing the kidney of a carpenter in Faisalabad.

Another case was lodged against him in Multan after a few deaths were reported when illegal organ transplant surgeries on patients.
