“In celebration of Abdul Sattar Edhi, let’s all lend a hand to someone in need today,” Google said. The ‘Angel of Mercy’ as he is known in Pakistan.

Google paid a tribute to Abdul Sattar Edhi on Tuesday on his 89th birthday with its Doodle showing him simply clad standing with his Edhi ambulance, a mother with her two kids, home shelter, pet dog and a book.

Google has placed the logo on its homepages in various countries,  including in the United States; Iceland; Portugal; Australia; New Zealand; Japan; Estonia; UK; Denmark; Ireland and Pakistan. The search engine company praised Abdul Sattar Edhi for helping people all around the world. Google said in its statement “Today’s Doodle honors Abdul Sattar Edhi, a global-reaching philanthropist and humanitarian who made it his life’s mission to helping those in need.”

In 1997, the foundation entered the Guinness World Records as the “largest volunteer ambulance organisation”.

They went on to say “Edhi was directly involved with the foundation throughout the rest of his life. He always focused more on those around him than on his own comfort or needs. In fact, he and his family slept in a room near the foundation’s headquarters and had only a few belongings. But his charitable empire and “family” were vast — at the time of his death, he and his wife Bilquis were registered as parents or guardians of tens of thousands of Pakistani children. “My mission is to love human beings,” he said in an interview. “Each day is the best day of my life.”

Here’s to Edhi, whose unwavering commitment to others will always be remembered.

Edhi born in 1928, is widely accepted as a humanitarian and is considered a pride for Pakistanis. He founded the Edhi Foundation back in 1951 after migrating to Pakistan upon independence.

Edhi saved the lives of thousands of orphan kids in Pakistan by raising them in his orphan home. He led the largest chain of 1800 ambulances across all cities in the country before passing away last year, July 8, 2016. He died last year in Karachi of renal failure.  He was offered treatment abroad, but insisted on being treated in a government hospital in Pakistan.

Edhi was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize, and appeared on the list again last year. In 2014, when Malala was given the Noble prize, the majority of Pakistanis wanted it to be given to Edhi who they thought symbolized peace and love for humanity, similar to Mother Theresa in India who was awarded the noble prize in 1979. A hashtag #NobelPrizeforEdhi was created at the time and becomes viral every time noble prize nominations are due.

The State Bank of Pakistan has announced that it will put Abdul Sattar Edhi picture on the Rupees 50 note.
