Muslim Women Welcome Govt’s Triple Talaq Stand, Want Ban At The Earliest

Muslim women cutting across sections have welcomed the Union government’s decision in the Supreme Court on Friday to oppose the practice of triple talaq. From Agra to Aligarh, many said in one voice that it should be banned at the earliest. Talking to TOI , social activist Maria Alam Umar said in Aligarh that not just triple talaq, the Muslim Personal Law Board (PLB), too, should be abolished for its “promale stand on almost every aspect of Muslim life”.

Umar added that the PLB was formed for explaining intricacies of Sharia, but over the years it had turned into a “dictator” or sorts, consistently favouring men. Umar said that according to the Quran, Muslim women have equal rights, including that of divorcing her husband (khulla). Hailing the Centre’s decision to oppose the practice, Umar said that if PLB favours triple talaq then it should also support maintenance for divorced women.
