Pakistan’s UN representative politely refuted Sheikh Hasina Wajid’s characterization of events that took place in the country in 1971 as ‘genocide’. He suggested that she come out of the narrative of hatred and that she move on as ‘hate only begets hate’. He stated that her version of events was not one that the world ascribed to.

Bangladesh was created as an independent country, formerly east Pakistan, after the fall of Dhaka on 16 December 1971. Sheikh Hasina party in recent years has propagated the narrative that the Pakistan army at that time used force against their own people to subjugate them.

The Hamoodur Rahman Commission was set up to uncover what happened. It concluded the existence of the Agartala Conspiracy, in which it was revealed the role of Indian intelligence, RAW, to set up the separatist and armed militant group Mukti Bahini who killed hundreds of people.
