Renault\u2019s van-making arm is evaluating an Espace-style people carrier based on new Trafic E-Tech van<\/p>\n

Renault is considering an electric MPV to rival the Volkswagen ID Buzz<\/a> \u2013 and it could reprise the radical seating arrangement from the Mk1 Espace.<\/p>\n

Unwrapping the new Trafic E-Tech electric van alongside the closely related Goelette and Estafette (below)\u00a0at The Commercial Vehicle show in Birmingham, Renault van\u00a0design chief Yannick Bignon told Autocar that a people-carrying\u00a0version is under consideration: \u201cToday, it\u2019s under study. We have not yet confirmed it, but it’s under study.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked whether the skateboard-style EV platform that underpins the trio of vans could allow for more radical seating arrangements, such as the swivelling \u2018captain\u2019s chairs\u2019 from the Espace, Bignon replied: \u201cEverything that you say will be the way that we are working on.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, he added that it was \u201ctoo early\u201d to talk in detail about such a version of the Trafic E-Tech, saying: \u201cIf we confirm the people mover, it will be [later].\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The comments reaffirm Autocar\u2019s previous report that a Renault\u00a0MPV\u00a0in the vein of the original Espace<\/a>, after the Espace name\u00a0was\u00a0reprised for a seven-seat SUV based on the Austral<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Olivier Brosse, Renault\u2019s global leader for the Ampr Medium EV platform, last year told Autocar that a new model in the vein of the seminal MPV was \u201csomething we are contemplating\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnically I think it is possible, but after that we would have to consider if an MPV would be accepted by European customers,\u201d added Brosse.<\/p>\n

Notably, Volkswagen has made headway with its ID Buzz since Brosse spoke to Autocar: according to data from analyst Jato Dynamics, it has sold nearly 5000 in Europe so far this year, more than double what it had managed at the same point in 2024.<\/p>\n

Kia is also angling for a slice of the market, priming a passenger version of its forthcoming\u00a0PV5 electric van<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the world,\u00a0MPVs are undergoing a revival.
