It&#8217;s\u00a0often a suitable alternative to petrol for use in a car with an internal combustion engine.<\/p>\n<h2>How are e-fuels produced?<\/h2>\n<p>E-fuels are made by separating hydrogen and oxygen from water using electricity. The next step in the process involves\u00a0capturing\u00a0CO2 from the air and\u00a0then combining that with\u00a0hydrogen and CO2 using chemical synthesis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>E-fuels are carbon neutral, meaning they use the same amount of CO2 emissions as they emit. For this reason, they\u2019re considered by some car brands, such as\u00a0<a href=\"\/car-review\/porsche\">Porsche<\/a>, as a potential alternative to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-news\/best-cars\/top-10-best-electric-cars\">electric cars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An e-fuel\u2019s removal of atmospheric carbon \u2013 either through photosynthesis when growing the biomass or by capture \u2013 is argued to offset the emissions produced when the fuel is burnt in an engine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Are e-fuels clean?<\/h2>\n<p>The argument around whether e-fuels are as environmentally friendly as they seem continues to divide opinion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite arguably being cleaner to produce, e-fuels still emit gases that are harmful to the environment, similar to petrol and diesel.<\/p>\n<p>According to the non-profit organisation Transport &amp; Environment, recent testing of e-fuels has shown that synthetic fuel emits a similar volume of NOx gases as a car running on regular E10 fuel, while also producing far more ammonia and carbon monoxide.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also the argument that e-fuels aren&#8217;t all that efficient in use. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enerdata.net\/publications\/executive-briefing\/e-fuels-to-decarbonise-transportation-sector.html\">Enerdata<\/a>, vehicles using e-fuels have an energy efficiency measuring 4-5 times lower than battery electric cars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Pros of e-fuels<\/h2>\n<p><span>There are a few positives to e-fuels. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some argue that e-fuels are a cleaner source of energy compared to petrol and diesel due to the methods that can be used to produce them.\u00a0Electricity required to produce e-fuels can theoretically be generated using solar and wind power.<\/p>\n<p>E<span>-fuels are also\u00a0capable of powering modern cars without the need for modifications. They can also be used in heavy goods vehicles and vans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While other fuels like hydrogen and electricity require new infrastructure, e-fuels can be used with existing fuel lorries, refineries and pipelines, and filling stations can also remain the same.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Need to fill up a car using e-fuels? You\u2019re in luck &#8211; it takes just a few minutes, like filling up with petrol or diesel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Cons of e-fuels<\/h2>\n<p>The key problem with e-fuels is that they\u2019re costly to produce and that they can\u2019t yet be produced in large quantities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re also incredibly energy-intensive to produce.\u00a0<span>In the case of e-fuels, there is a huge energy requirement to overcome to produce the necessary hydrogen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>T&amp;E suggests the EU would be required to produce one and a half times its current energy production to generate\u00a0enough electricity to power its entire road fleet using e-fuels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition, research from the International Council on Clean Transport (ICCT) suggests that around 48% of renewable electricity will be lost during the process of converting e-fuels into liquid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For comparison, it was found that when using\u00a0<span>renewable electricity,<\/span>\u00a0a battery electric car could travel up to six times farther than a car using e-fuel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite being cleaner to produce, e-fuels also still emit gases that are harmful to the environment, similar to petrol and diesel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>As with fossil fuels, burning them produces poisonous carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, which pose a health risk for local communities. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Which manufacturers are investing in e-fuels?<\/h2>\n<p>Porsche is the front-running car brand for\u00a0e-fuels. So much so that the brand invested \u00a362 million into pilot production of synthetic fuels in Chile late in 2022, with a target of roughly 28,500 gallons (130,000 litres) annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe potential of e-fuels is huge,\u201d said Porsche research and development executive Michael Steiner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are currently more than 1.3 billion vehicles with combustion engines worldwide. Many of these will be on the roads for decades to come, and e-fuels offer the owners of existing cars a nearly carbon-neutral alternative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-body-image\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/e-fuels-the-controversial-future-of-sustainable-driving-1.jpg\" width=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite heavily investing in electric vehicles, Volkswagen and Porsche CEO Oliver Blume says synthetic fuels could extend the life of the purely combustion-engined 911 until the end of the decade.<\/p>\n<p>Several other car makers, particularly those with low-volume production outputs, are also keen on using e-fuels to retain combustion engines beyond the end of the decade.<\/p>\n<p>Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna also suggested that he thinks \u201cICE still has a lot to do\u201d and Ineos Automotive CEO Lynn Calder was categoric in predicting \u201cthat the combustion engine will continue\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-body-image\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/e-fuels-the-controversial-future-of-sustainable-driving-2.jpg\" width=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mazda has also expressed interest, with the brand\u2019s deputy general manager of R&amp;D Christian Schultze saying describing e-fuels as &#8220;an important addition to electrification as they are easy to implement, and they can give an immense effect to the decarbonization simply by the high number of cars used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other brands keen to explore e-fuels further include Renault-owned Alpine, while others such as Bentley and Volvo are opposed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>What does the future look like for e-fuels?<\/h2>\n<p>The UK government has yet to factor e-fuels into its emissions-reduction strategy officially.<\/p>\n<p>A report by the Transport Select Committee recently accused the UK government of \u201cputting all its eggs in one basket\u201d by effectively mandating a widespread transition to battery-electric vehicles from 2035.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report cited shortcomings in EV charging infrastructure and a shortage of raw materials, which may slow or prevent a smooth transition to EVs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the cliff edge of 2030 (2035, 2040 and 2050) approaches and minds are concentrated, reality will bite,\u201d it said. The committee urged a \u201creality check\u201d on the government\u2019s transport strategy. \u201cAddressing the existing [petrol and diesel] fleet will be decisive in achieving the UK\u2019s climate goals,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-body-image\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/e-fuels-the-controversial-future-of-sustainable-driving-3.jpg\" width=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are serious concerns about manufacturing carbon-neutral fuels. As with fossil fuels, burning them produces poisonous carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide, which pose a health risk for local communities. In the case of e-fuels, there is a huge energy requirement to overcome in producing the necessary hydrogen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to a 2019 report by the International Energy Agency, producing all of today\u2019s industrial hydrogen output from electricity would create an electricity demand of 3600TWh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is almost 1000TWh more than the EU\u2019s entire energy production last year, of which just 39.4% came from renewables. And that just to match today\u2019s hydrogen output, not the surplus needed for the mass industrialisation of e-fuels; using electricity that could less wastefully power battery-electric cars.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"image-body-image\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/e-fuels-the-controversial-future-of-sustainable-driving-4.jpg\" width=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yoann Gimbert, e-mobility analyst for environmental lobby group Transport &amp; Environment, said in October 2022 that using e-fuels in cars and commercial vehicles risks \u201c[sucking] up renewable electricity needed for the rest of the economy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Gimbert added that e-fuels should be diverted to planes and ships, which cannot yet use batteries to decarbonise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, momentum continues to build globally. Porsche\u2019s e-fuel partner, Highly Innovative Fuels, began production at the Haru Oni plant in Chile last December and recently gave the go-ahead for a second plant in Texas, US.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Steve Sapsford, an independent consultant and advisor to sustainable fuel specialist Coryton, told Autocar: \u201cThe trick is using the resources for the best overall outcome. On the renewable electricity question, the key argument is that you should be making e-fuels where you have an abundance\/excess of renewable energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why the Haru Oni plant is in Chile. There is an excess of solar and wind, more than their domestic consumption, but it is difficult to export that energy as electricity to energy-hungry countries, [such as in] Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt then becomes much more attractive to use that energy to make an extremely energy-dense liquid hydrocarbon, which is easy to ship around the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>David Richardson, Coryton\u2019s business development director, believes a total shift is required: \u201cBehind the scenes, there are a lot of very worried people that are saying there\u2019s no way that we can do this [achieve climate targets by switching solely to EVs].\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d rather everyone was honest and reset ourselves.
