This flagship model, known for its opulence and spaciousness, is set to receive a significant update in about two years, with a projected launch in 2027. So, what can we expect from this new iteration? Let’s dive into the details.

What’s Driving the New BMW X7?

In a recent announcement during their financial results presentation for the first quarter of the 2025 fiscal year, BMW confirmed that they are investing in research and development for the next-gen X7, along with other models like the X5 and the upcoming iX3. This investment hints at a strategic shift in how BMW approaches its vehicle platforms. The new X7 will be built on an upgraded version of the Cluster Architecture (CLAR), which is currently used in the existing X7, as well as the 7 Series and i7 saloons.

This platform upgrade is particularly exciting because it will allow the new X7 to offer an electric powertrain for the first time. As the automotive industry increasingly shifts towards electrification, this move aligns with BMW’s broader strategy to diversify its offerings and meet evolving consumer demands.

How Will the New X7 Stand Out?

Frank Weber, BMW’s R&D chief, has emphasized the importance of flexibility in their vehicle platforms. He noted that the future of automotive design lies not just in the platform itself but in how various components—like engines, motors, and software—are integrated and utilized. This approach will enable BMW to create a more versatile and efficient vehicle lineup.

The new X7 will be part of a larger transformation within BMW, as the company aims to refresh its entire model range. Starting with the iX3 debuting at the Munich Motor Show, every vehicle will undergo significant updates or complete redesigns, adopting the new “Neue Klasse” design language and technologies. This comprehensive overhaul suggests that BMW is not just looking to keep pace with competitors but to set new standards in luxury and performance.

What About the Design?

Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW’s design chief, has shared insights into the brand’s future aesthetic direction. He expressed a commitment to ensuring that the new design language will be consistent across the entire product lineup. This means that the new X7 will not only feature advanced technology but also a fresh look that aligns with the evolving identity of the BMW brand. The goal is to create a cohesive visual language that resonates with both new and loyal customers.

However, it’s worth noting that while the X7 and other models are set for exciting updates, the fate of models like the 4 Series and 8 Series remains uncertain. As BMW navigates this transition, it will be interesting to see how these models adapt to the new design and technology paradigms.

What Does This Mean for Luxury SUV Buyers?

For those in the market for a luxury SUV, the upcoming BMW X7 represents a promising option. With its anticipated electric powertrain, enhanced technology, and a refreshed design, it’s poised to compete fiercely in a segment that’s rapidly evolving. Buyers can expect not just a vehicle that looks good but one that incorporates the latest advancements in automotive technology.

The big takeaway? The new BMW X7 isn’t just about luxury—it’s about smarter engineering and design that meets the needs of today’s consumers. If you’re considering a luxury SUV, keep an eye on this model as it develops. It could very well set the standard for what a modern luxury vehicle should be. Start following the updates, and you might just find your next dream car waiting for you in a couple of years.

Brand’s largest and most opulent mainstream model is set for replacement in two years’ time

BMW has for the first time confirmed that it is developing a second generation of its X7 luxury SUV.

Releasing its financial results for the first quarter of its 2025 financial year, the BMW Group said it had incurred research and development costs for the Neue Klasse models such as the new iX3, as well as for successors to the X5 and X7.

It gave no further indication of when the new models will arrive, but documents sent to US dealers previously suggested the new X7 would arrive in 2027, a year after the new X5.

Autocar understands it will be underpinned by an upgraded version of the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) structure that is used for the existing X7, as well as the 7 Series and i7 saloons.

The update will allow the new X7 to offer an electric powertrain for the first time, with the smaller iX5 set to adopt new-generation electric drive units, round-cell batteries and an 800V electrical architecture.

“We are in a phase where flexibility is required,” BMW R&D boss Frank Weber previously told Autocar. “We have to detach ourselves from how we have perceived platforms up to now.

“There is an increasing realisation that the art of mastering diversity in your portfolio lies in how you use and network major components – engines, motors, battery cells, on-board computers, control units, app functions, and software upgrades.

“It’s not so much the platform structure itself but the individual components and how you use them.”

The new X7 will be but one pillar in a completely revitalised line-up. Starting from the launch of the new iX3 at this year’s Munich motor show, BMW will replace or substantially update every single model in its range, rolling out the Neue Klasse design language and technologies.

BMW Group design boss Adrian van Hooydonk told Autocar: “We will make sure that the form language that we are developing now – and starting this year at the IAA [Munich show] with the first of the Neue Klasse vehicles – will be rolled out over the entire product portfolio, leaving no car behind. Of course, it would not be good for us or for our customers if there would be a new type of BMW and a ‘classic’ type of BMW. We’re going to change the look and feel of the BMW brand.”

However, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the 4 Series and 8 Series.

[2,137

post-62998","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-featured","category-news
["GET
