<\/a><\/p>\nPetrol-powered city car will finally enter a new generation after 18 years, using electric 500e underpinnings<\/p>\n
Fiat has released the first images of the new 500<\/a> Hybrid, revealing\u00a0it will get an overhauled interior and a six-speed manual gearbox.<\/p>\n Photographs of a group of pre-release prototypes show\u00a0that it will look identical to the\u00a0electric 500e\u00a0except for a reworked front grille to feed more air to a petrol\u00a0engine.<\/p>\n Inside, the dashboard features a larger and squarer new storage cubby\u00a0and the\u00a0gearlever is elevated alongside the steering wheel \u2013\u00a0as in the\u00a0old petrol 500<\/a>.<\/p>\n Fiat has yet to confirm which powertrain the 500 Hybrid will use, but it’s expected to employ the same\u00a01.0-litre three-cylinder\u00a0mild-hybrid\u00a0Firefl<\/span>y<\/span> engine featured in the old 500 and\u00a0Fiat Panda<\/a>.<\/p>\n The presence of a manual gearbox rules out the 1.2-litre three-cylinder\u00a0mild-hybrid\u00a0Puretech engine<\/span>\u00a0used in a wide range of models under the Stellantis corporate umbrella, such as the new Fiat Grande Panda<\/a>, because\u00a0it has\u00a0been offered exclusively\u00a0with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.<\/p>\n Production of the 500 Hybrid will begin in the fourth quarter of this year \u2013\u00a0earlier than the early 2026 deadline previously set by Fiat.<\/p>\n The move to retrofit an electric car with a combustion engine is unprecedented in the European car industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Several reports in March 2024<\/a>\u00a0suggested that the bold measure was borne out of\u00a0two key challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n First was the need to up production rates at the Mirafiori factory amid slow sales of\u00a0the 500e and its\u00a0Abarth 500e\u00a0hot hatch<\/a>\u00a0sibling, which led Fiat to\u00a0pause\u00a0production<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0several occasions last year.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, it ended production of the old petrol 500\u00a0(which accounted for the majority of 500 sales),\u00a0as the 17-year-old model fell foul of new EU legislation on cybersecurity, which would have required a costly rehomologation effort.<\/p>\n Fiat CEO Olivier Fran\u00e7ois\u00a0acknowledged the challenges, saying in a statement that the 500 Hybrid will boost production at Mirafiori “to ensure the plant\u2019s productivity”.<\/p>\n He added that launching a new combustion-engined 500 in response to flagging sales of the EV serves as “proof that social relevance is at the core of the brand mission”.<\/p>\n Fiat previously said it would also invest\u00a0some \u20ac100 million (\u00a385m) into the 500e, with plans to redesign its platform for new battery technologies aimed at improving its affordability.<\/p>\n This suggests that an update for the\u00a0EV is also due around 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":63327,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"Default","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,137],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-63326","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-featured","category-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/63326","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=63326"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/63326\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/63327"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=63326"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=63326"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=63326"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}![\"2026](\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/reviving-the-classic-the-new-fiat-500-hybrid-combines-tradition-with-modern-efficiency-1.jpg\")
