It will be\u00a0the first model based on the performance brand\u2019s AMG.EA electric car platform.<\/p>\n<p>Autocar understands it will employ as many as three motors of a new design, each producing 473bhp in a unit weighing 24kg and occupying just five litres\u00a0of space \u2013 roughly half the size and weight of a <a href=\"\/car-review\/tesla\/model-3\">Tesla Model 3<\/a>\u2019s 241bhp radial flux motor.<\/p>\n<p>The same motor will also be deployed in the AMG variant of the <a href=\"\/car-news\/electric-cars\/mercedes-amg-cla-45-return-500bhp-ev-axial-flux-motors\">new Mercedes-Benz CLA saloon<\/a> due next year as well as a\u00a0<a href=\"\/car-news\/new-cars\/porsche-cayenne-ev-lands-2025-and-ice-car-lives-past-2030\">Porsche Cayenne Electric rival<\/a> due in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Senior staff at Yasa remain coy, however, about whether the AMG motors will be assembled solely in Oxfordshire or whether Mercedes will establish its own production line in continental\u00a0Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the rise in annual output has required an overhaul of the company\u2019s factory, setting up two production lines dedicated to supplying motors according to the needs of Ferrari and Lamborghini.<\/p>\n<p>Discussing Yasa\u2019s rise from a University of Oxford\u00a0PhD project to a supplier to some of the world\u2019s most prominent supercar manufacturers, founder and technology chief Tim Woolmer told Autocar: \u201cFerrari said to us: \u2018We cannot find a supplier on the planet that can fit a motor in the space [65mm] we have, because the engine crank is very low\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cT<\/span>hey physically couldn&#8217;t get the performance they wanted from any other product on the planet. That&#8217;s a nice piece of business, if you&#8217;re told that, because it means that you&#8217;re almost designed into their vehicle for life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commercial director Andy North added: \u201cLast year, something like 75% of Ferraris that came out of Maranello had a Yasa motor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yasa executives\u00a0suggested that the company\u00a0has a similar arrangement with Lamborghini, with its motors being integral to the design of the Revuelto and Temerario.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Woolmer suggested that\u00a0Yasa\u2019s ultimate\u00a0ambition is to become a byword for performance in the same vein as firms such as Brembo. He said: \u201cThey are the go-to people for high-performance brakes.\u00a0There are a few brands like that in automotive, and we want Yasa\u2019s brand to be synonymous with that, but equally with having the volume in the manufacturing to back it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Yasa developing radical new in-wheel motor<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/car-news\/technology\/why-wheel-motors-are-next-big-thing-electric-cars\">In-wheel motors<\/a> have become a focal point of EV development over the past two years, as new materials, designs and production techniques have mitigated concerns around the effects of adding unsprung weight.<\/p>\n<p>Among the most prominent manufacturers of in-wheel motors is Surrey-based Protean.<\/p>\n<p>But Woolmer revealed to Autocar that Yasa is\u00a0also\u00a0angling for a slice of the market, saying:\u00a0\u201cProbably\u00a0in 12 to 14 months, we will be showing off our technology for the first time, and it will blow your socks off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added that EVs are currently \u201cin the 1930s\u201d, comparing the benefits brought by in-wheel motors to the development of disc brakes by Dunlop and Jaguar in the early 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would guess in a significant period of time from now \u2013\u00a020, 30\u00a0or 40 years \u2013\u00a0that every electric car will have in-wheel motors.
