As the automotive world shifts toward electrification, this new contender is set to challenge established players like the Lotus Eletre and the Porsche Cayenne EV. Let’s dive into what makes this vehicle a potential game-changer.

What’s Under the Hood?

At the heart of the electric GT SUV lies the innovative AMG.EA platform, which is designed specifically for high-performance electric vehicles. This platform will debut with the production version of the Vision AMG saloon in 2026, but the SUV will follow closely behind, hitting UK showrooms in 2027. What’s particularly exciting is the expected power output—over 1000bhp—thanks to advanced axial-flux electric motors developed by Yasa, a company owned by Mercedes-Benz. These motors can produce up to 480bhp and 590lb-ft of torque, setting the stage for exhilarating performance.

But it’s not just about raw power. The SUV will feature both twin- and tri-motor configurations, allowing for exceptional handling and acceleration. With benchmarks like the 906bhp Lotus Eletre R in its sights, the AMG SUV is designed to deliver performance that rivals some of the best in the business.

How Will It Handle the Road?

While performance is a key focus, the new AMG SUV will also prioritize versatility. Insiders indicate that it will come equipped with variable ride height control, enhancing ground clearance for off-road adventures. This means you won’t just be confined to the asphalt; whether you’re navigating city streets or tackling rugged terrain, this SUV is built to handle it all.

Aesthetically, the SUV will carry forward the bold design language that AMG is known for. Expect a striking front end with a fresh take on the iconic Panamericana grille and distinctive headlights featuring the three-pointed star graphics. The flared wheel arches and wide rear haunches will not only give it a commanding presence but also contribute to its aerodynamic efficiency, thanks to features like retractable door handles.

What’s Inside the Cabin?

Step inside, and you’ll find a unique dashboard design paired with the latest AMG.OS software, promising a high-tech yet user-friendly experience. The interior will reflect the luxury and performance ethos of AMG, ensuring that every drive feels special.

The SUV will be offered solely in a traditional SUV form, with a design that balances aesthetics and practicality. A relatively upright tailgate and angled rear window will maximize cargo space, making it a practical choice for families or those with active lifestyles.

What About Battery Technology?

While specifics on battery technology remain under wraps, there are hints that Mercedes-AMG is working on a new chemistry combination aimed at improving efficiency and range. This could mean longer journeys between charges, which is a crucial factor for any EV buyer. Current models like the EQE 53 4Matic+ utilize a 90.6kWh battery pack, offering a range of up to 321 miles and supporting rapid charging speeds. Expect similar advancements in the new SUV, especially with a focus on heat management and faster charging capabilities.

How Will It Drive?

The driving experience is set to be enhanced by the Active Ride Control system, which has already proven its worth in models like the SL and GT. This system uses hydraulic pumps at each wheel to minimize body roll and maintain a smooth ride, even at high speeds. Plus, it can automatically lower the ride height for better aerodynamics, ensuring that performance and efficiency go hand in hand.

The new AMG SUV will be produced alongside the upcoming saloon at Mercedes’ Sindelfingen facility in Germany, marking a significant step in AMG’s journey toward electrification.

The big takeaway? The Mercedes-AMG electric GT SUV isn’t just about being another luxury electric vehicle; it’s about redefining what performance means in the EV space. With its blend of power, versatility, and cutting-edge technology, this SUV is poised to make a significant impact when it arrives. Keep an eye out for this one—it could very well set new standards in the high-performance electric SUV segment.

High-riding electric GT will use advanced tech to take on Lotus Eletre and Porsche Cayenne EVs

Mercedes-AMG is ramping up testing of its answer to the Lotus Eletre and Porsche Cayenne Electric as it primes its saloon counterpart for a debut in the coming weeks.

Currently known as the electric GT SUV (a name that could be carried into production), the super-SUV is set to reach UK forecourts in 2027.
