<\/a><\/p>\nBrand’s sporting flagship swaps circular running lights for hexagons and will be lighter than rivals<\/p>\n
Alpine has released the first preview image of the next-generation A110<\/a>, due next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n The new car \u2013 which will replace the\u00a0current model’s petrol engine with a battery-electric drivetrain \u2013 appears to have a similar cab-forward design, but swaps circular daytime-running lights for a new hexagonal motif.\u00a0<\/p>\n Little else can be drawn from the image of the car under wraps, but it is possible that it features a small ducktail rear spoiler for aerodynamic purposes. Indeed,\u00a0efficiency will almost certainly\u00a0become a key directive with the swap to electric power.<\/p>\n The new car will also be lighter than its combustion-engined rivals, despite the switch to EV.<\/p>\n Renault<\/a> Group CEO Luca de Meo previously told Autocar that the company had made a \u201cnot rational\u201d decision to \u201cinvest a lot of money\u201d in a bespoke electric sports car platform for the next A110 and its\u00a0derivatives \u2013 including a likely 2+2 version called the\u00a0A310<\/a> \u2013 but it had \u201clooked at Porsche<\/a> for inspiration\u201d in how to successfully build a sports brand.<\/p>\n \u201cPorsche has the 911<\/a> [platform] as their own, and then they use others [VW Group\u00a0architectures] for the likes of the Taycan<\/a> and\u00a0Cayenne<\/a>. You keep the heart then as very true to the brand,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n To that end, the Alpine<\/a> sports car platform will be uncompromising in its purpose to root the French\u00a0brand\u00a0in performance models, which then lends credibility to its more lifestyle-focused mainstream models, such as\u00a0the new\u00a0A390 SUV<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThe next A110 will be lighter than a comparable car with a combustion engine but with no compromise in performance,\u201d said de Meo.<\/p>\n He added that making the bespoke architecture was objectively \u201ca completely stupid decision\u201d due to the likely return on investment in pure sales terms. A planned tie-up with Lotus on the architecture fell through<\/a> but Alpine places such importance on bona fide sports cars that it has continued\u00a0development by itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n Alpine has experimented with lightweight electric models previously, such as with the A110 E-ternit\u00e9\u00a0concept<\/a>, an electric conversion of the current A110 that just undercut the\u00a0Porsche 718 Boxster<\/a> at 1400kg.\u00a0<\/p>\n The electric A110’s design will be only subtly evolved from the current car, de Meo suggested. It “needs to look like” an A110, he said. “Porsche doesn’t make a square 911.”<\/p>\n More broadly, de Meo said \u201csix or seven\u201d uniquely positioned models would make up the Alpine range, including\u00a0\u201csome emotional\u00a0pure sports cars\u201d. Eighteen months ago, the brand said its intention was to launch seven models by 2030, starting with the new Alpine A290<\/a>\u00a0hot hatchback.<\/p>\n The plan is to crown the range with a supercar<\/a>\u00a0and Alpine CEO Philippe Krief hinted that this will\u00a0come towards the end of the \u201creally ambitious\u201d range roll-out and\u00a0serve\u00a0as the flagship of its\u00a0\u201cdream garage\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n Krief said the firm is \u201cnot yet\u201d ready to launch the model, which will\u00a0be developed at a new R&D centre born out of the firm\u2019s soon-to-be-closed Formula 1 engine factory. He added that the launch of a supercar for the firm is a three-stage process: first a \u201cbrand exercise\u201d, next a \u201ctech showcase\u201d and then the third one is \u201cbusiness\u201d.<\/p>\n To that end, Alpine has shown off a pure concept supercar called the Alpenglow as a brand exercise in 2022, followed by a hydrogen-combustion technology showcase version of it earlier this year, the Alpenglow Hy4<\/a>. The working title for the production model is Future Alpine Supercar.<\/p>\n Krief said Alpine wants\u00a0to position itself as a \u201cFrench sports specialist brand that also happens to be electric\u201d, rather than call itself a pure EV maker.\u00a0<\/p>\n Head of product Sovany Ang added that the firm wants\u00a0to \u201cretain accessibility\u201d and will\u00a0\u201ctarget specific things and segments where it makes sense for us to be\u201d, rather than try to be a volume or a premium car maker.\u00a0<\/p>\n The dealer network will expand\u00a0to around 140 globally by the end of the year as Alpine looks to break itself out of France and it has established a new flagship facility in Barcelona that also includes e-sports and sim racing areas, as well as\u00a0a bar and restaurant. This format will also be introduced in London and Paris.<\/p>\n Krief confirmed that the current A110 will\u00a0end production in 2026, when a small-series exemption for GSR2 regulations<\/a> ends.
