This isn’t just any supercar; it’s a turbocharged V6 hybrid powerhouse that promises to deliver over 1000bhp. This bold move comes as the French automaker navigates the evolving landscape of the automotive industry, where electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming the norm for mainstream models. But Alpine is taking a different route for its flagship, emphasizing the thrill of combustion alongside electric innovation.

Why Is Alpine Sticking with Combustion for Its Supercar?

You might wonder why Alpine, a brand that has been shifting towards an all-electric lineup, is opting for a combustion engine in its new supercar. According to Alpine CEO Philippe Krief, the brand isn’t just about selling electric cars; it’s about creating “sporty cars, passion cars, exclusive cars.” This philosophy underpins their decision to integrate a V6 engine with twin electric motors, resulting in an all-wheel-drive setup that enhances performance and handling.

The Alpenglow concept car, which previewed this new supercar, showcased a hydrogen-powered V6, hinting at Alpine’s forward-thinking approach. While the supercar will initially feature a traditional combustion engine, the company is exploring hydrogen as a potential future fuel source. This could be a game-changer, especially with looming emissions regulations set for 2035 that aim to eliminate tailpipe CO2 emissions.

What Makes This Supercar Stand Out?

The new supercar is being developed at the Renault Group’s Hypertech division, located at the renowned Viry-Châtillon Formula 1 engine facility. This connection to motorsport is crucial, as it allows Alpine to leverage cutting-edge technology and expertise from the racing world. The target weight for the vehicle is below 1600kg, which is impressive for a car boasting such high power output.

Krief’s background in R&D at Ferrari, particularly with the SF90 Stradale, provides a unique perspective as Alpine aims to compete with high-performance benchmarks. While the Alpine supercar will not use the slimline axial-flux hybrid motors found in the SF90, it will incorporate Hypertech’s own radial-flux motors, designed to achieve exceptional power density. This means that each wheel can be controlled independently, enhancing overall handling and driving dynamics.

What’s the Price Tag?

With such ambitious engineering and performance goals, the supercar will come with a hefty price tag of over €200,000 (around £168,000). Krief believes that if they can sell the Renault 5 Turbo for €155,000, there’s definitely a market for a premium Alpine offering. This limited-run project aims to be profitable while showcasing the brand’s commitment to excellence in both performance and technology.

How Does This Fit Into the Future of Alpine?

Alpine’s strategy reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry, where brands are increasingly looking to blend the worlds of motorsport and consumer vehicles. The Hypertech division is at the forefront of this initiative, aiming to create synergies that have historically been challenging to achieve. By tapping into motorsport excellence, Alpine hopes to elevate not just its supercar but the entire Renault Group.

The big takeaway? Alpine’s new supercar isn’t just about raw power; it’s a testament to the brand’s dedication to innovation and performance in a rapidly changing automotive landscape. As they navigate the balance between combustion and electric power, Alpine is poised to carve out a unique niche in the supercar market. Keep an eye on this one—it’s bound to be a thrilling ride.

French firm says combustion still makes sense for sporting flagships as mainstream models go EV

Alpine will launch a supercar in 2028 with a turbocharged V6 hybrid powertrain pumping out more than 1000bhp, the head of the Renault Group’s premium brand has said.

The new supercar was previewed by the firm’s Alpenglow concept, which also featured a V6. However, Alpine has opted to add twin electric motors on the front axle to create an all-wheel-drive layout and beef up the output.

Alpine had been moving in the direction of an all-electric line-up, with production of its A110 combustion-engined sports car ending early next year. However, the brand has decided it needs a combustion engine for its new supercar and hasn’t ruled out additional hybrid models in the future.

“We are not selling electric cars. We are selling sporty cars, passion cars, exclusive cars,” said Alpine CEO Philippe Krief at the launch of the A390 EV crossover.

The supercar, including its V6 engine and high-powered electric motors, will be developed by the Renault Group’s racing and performance-focused Hypertech Alpine R&D division, located at the Viry-Châtillon Formula 1 engine facility to the south of Paris, said Krief. The target weight of the car is below 1600kg.

Krief worked in R&D at Ferrari when the company developed the plug-in hybrid SF90 Stradale, which is likely to be a key benchmark for the new car. However, the layout of the new Alpine supercar is closer to that of the Lamborghini Revuelto V12 plug-in hybrid, which also uses twin electric motors on the front axle, sourced from UK-based Yasa.

The Alpine supercar won’t use Yasa’s slimline axial-flux hybrid motors – also found on the SF90 – but instead more conventional radial-flux motors of Hypertech’s own design.

“Axial flux is perfect between the engine and a gearbox. But on the front axle, if you have a big diameter, it doesn’t matter,” said Krief.

Alpine is targeting incredibly high power density from its new electric motors – enough to achieve 1000bhp in total with the V6. Fitting twin motors on the front axle also allows Alpine to control the power of each wheel separately, to the benefit of overall handling.

The Alpenglow V6 concept theoretically ran on hydrogen, which would give Alpine a potential way of extending the life of the supercar when it eventually falls foul of 2035 emissions regulations that call for the end of tailpipe CO2 emissions.

The supercar will cost more than €200,000 (£168,000) to ensure the limited-run project is profitable.”If we’re able to sell €155,000 Renault 5 Turbo, you think there could be room for Alpine above that,” said Krief.

The supercar will showcase the work of the Hypertech division, which is being used to more aggressively find overlaps between the world of motorsports and road cars, something car companies have long struggled to achieve. ”We are going to create a lot more links than traditionally,” said Krief.

The division will “tap into excellence in motorsports to turbocharge Alpine and Renault Group,” said Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo at the same A390 launch.

David Francis

[2,137

post-64349","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-featured","category-news
["GET
