J\u00fcrgen Guldner, who heads BMW&#8217;s hydrogen vehicle project, recently expressed concerns about launching their upcoming FCEV in a market where the necessary infrastructure is virtually nonexistent. Without a robust network of hydrogen stations, potential buyers are understandably hesitant. <\/p>\n<p>This lack of infrastructure isn&#8217;t just a minor inconvenience; it\u2019s a major barrier to entry. BMW plans to introduce its first FCEV in 2028, but without a solid refueling network, it may not make sense to launch it in the UK. Currently, the only mainstream hydrogen vehicle available is the Toyota Mirai, priced at \u00a364,690. <\/p>\n<p>The Vision vs. Reality of Hydrogen Vehicles<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2013, UK H2 Mobility predicted that by 2030, there would be 1.6 million hydrogen vehicles on British roads. Fast forward to today, and that vision seems increasingly distant. The rise of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) has dominated the zero-emissions conversation, with over 32,000 battery-electric cars sold in the UK in just one month this year. In stark contrast, no FCEVs have been sold in the UK so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents of hydrogen technology, including BMW and Toyota, argue that FCEVs are essential for achieving a broader transition to zero-emissions transportation. Guldner points out that FCEVs could particularly benefit those who drive longer distances or live in urban areas where charging infrastructure is limited. However, the current landscape shows that hydrogen isn\u2019t just competing against electric vehicles; it\u2019s also up against traditional fossil-fuel combustion engines, which remain cheaper and more accessible.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s Holding Hydrogen Back?<\/p>\n<p>The challenges facing hydrogen vehicles are multifaceted. Christopher Jackson, CEO of Protium, a green hydrogen provider, highlighted the difficulties in attracting investment for hydrogen infrastructure, especially when the narrative sounds similar to that of EV chargers.<\/p>\n<p>The Role of Government and Future Prospects<\/p>\n<p>Without a governmental push\u2014like mandated hydrogen infrastructure or higher taxes on fossil fuels\u2014the market for FCEVs is likely to remain stagnant until at least 2035, when the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles is set to be banned. Influential bodies like the Climate Change Committee have expressed skepticism about hydrogen\u2019s role in surface transport, further complicating the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Industry suppliers are also adjusting their expectations. Forvia, a major player in the fuel-cell market, has reduced its investment plans, while Johnson Matthey has scaled back its fuel-cell investments significantly. Even Renault&#8217;s hydrogen van joint venture, Hyvia, has gone into liquidation, citing slow progress in developing hydrogen mobility ecosystems in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these challenges, some industry insiders remain optimistic. They argue that the inability of electric vehicles alone to meet the UK\u2019s decarbonization targets by 2050 could create a renewed interest in hydrogen technology. Protium\u2019s Jackson believes that once the market shows signs of promise, investment will follow.<\/p>\n<p>The big takeaway? The future of hydrogen vehicles isn\u2019t about perfection\u2014it\u2019s about smarter adjustments. The industry needs a catalyst, ideally from the government, to kickstart the necessary infrastructure and guarantee a market. Currently Toyota is the only mainstream manufacturer offering an FCEV in the UK,\u00a0the <a href=\"\/car-review\/toyota\/mirai\">Mirai saloon<\/a>, costing \u00a364,690.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2013, UK H2 Mobility predicted there would be 1.6 million hydrogen vehicles on Britain&#8217;s roads by 2030. However, BEV\u00a0technology has since come to dominate the race for zero-emissions propulsion, and so far this year no FCEVs have been sold in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Globally the picture is not much better, with sales of all FCEVs\u00a0(including lorries and buses) falling 22% last year to 12,866, according to figures published by Hydrogen Insights.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, 32,378 battery-electric cars were sold in the UK in May alone, new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents of hydrogen including BMW and Toyota argue that FCEV technology is needed to allow the entire vehicle market to shift to zero-emissions propulsion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research shows that customers would be people who drive longer distances and those who live in the cities,\u201d Guldner said. \u201cOur strategy is to have a second technology in our portfolio, then people can choose which one they want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Producers meanwhile argue that creating green hydrogen is a great way to store renewable energy in those unpredictable periods when too much electricity is being generated.<\/p>\n<p>A range of obstacles remain in the way \u2013\u00a0some solvable, others less so. The high cost of FCEV technology would come down if the demand were there, Guldner said.<\/p>\n<p>The company is also comfortable packaging large enough high-pressure tanks into the body structure to give decent range, currently below that of a diesel equivalent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, car companies alone can\u2019t nudge the infrastructure in the right direction, and those are best placed to find the money are finding it very difficult after what happened to EV charger companies. They raised a lot of investment to spend on building an infrastructure that turned to be too big for initial demand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of those businesses are really struggling today,\u201d Christopher Jackson, CEO of Protium, a green hydrogen provider, said at the same London event. \u201cThen you come in as a hydrogen player and tell the investors &#8216;well, we&#8217;re going to do something that sounds the same as that&#8217;. It is a harder story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Protium is currently building three hydrogen fuelling stations, aimed at filling lorries, and predicts a big jump in demand between 2028 and 2030 as the clock runs down on the government\u2019s net-zero targets.<\/p>\n<p>One problem is that, right now, hydrogen isn\u2019t competing against BEV technology\u00a0but cheaper fossil-fuelled combustion engines too.<\/p>\n<p>That target customer driving longer distances or street-parked in the city already has their ideal powertrain, and that won\u2019t change until the sale of ICE vehicles running on petrol or diesel is banned in 2035.<\/p>\n<p>Without a government nudge in the form of mandated hydrogen infrastructure or higher tax on fossil fuels or urban bans, the market for FCEVs is essentially dormant until that date.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no help here from influential government advisers the Climate Change Committee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see only a very niche, if any, role [for hydrogen] in surface transport,\u201d it said in its Seventh Carbon Budget, a long term vision for the future of decarbonisation.<\/p>\n<p>Those suppliers that banked on a speedier ramp-up are suffering as vehicle manufacturers dial back their plans.<\/p>\n<p>For example, French supply\u00a0giant Forvia, a joint-venture partner of Stellantis and Michelin in fuel-cell maker Symbio, has reduced its investment spend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market does not move as quickly as we assumed two to three years ago.\u201d CEO Martin Fischer\u00a0said on his company\u2019s earnings call in May. \u201cWe are adjusting our efforts to these new realities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile\u00a0OPmobility (formerly Plastic Omnium), a supplier of hydrogen tanks for Stellantis vans, also said on its earnings call that it was reducing the speed of its production ramp-up\u00a0\u201cbecause of some delays coming from customers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, fuel-cell stack specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-news\/business-finance-and-corporate\/analysis-will-johnson-mattheys-hydrogen-gamble-pay\">Johnson Matthey<\/a>\u00a0booked a \u00a3100 million impairment in its investments in fuel-cells for the 2024 financial year after deciding not to open its repurposed Royston plant, affecting 400 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>It also said it had slashed its fuel-cell investment \u201cto maintenance levels of no more than \u00a35m per annum from FY2025\/26\u00a0with no additional growth investment planned\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had basically restructured the business because the growth wasn&#8217;t coming as originally forecast,\u201d CEO Liam Condon said on the company\u2019s earnings call in May.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In February, Renault&#8217;s and Plug Power\u2019s hydrogen van joint venture, <a href=\"\/car-news\/technology\/new-hydrogen-tech-delivering-435-mile-range-vans\">Hyvia<\/a>, when into liquidation, citing the \u201ctoo-slow evolution of hydrogen mobility ecosystems in Europe and the very significant development costs required for H2 innovation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Supply\u00a0giant Valeo meanwhile is pessimistic about hydrogen propulsion ever working.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not believe that there will be hydrogen used in vehicles in the short term.
