For over five decades, the Range Rover name has been synonymous with luxury SUVs—think countryside estates, city skylines, and a dash of adventure. But even icons need to evolve. This year, JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) unveiled a striking new logo for Range Rover, just as the brand gears up to launch its first-ever electric model. So, why the change now?

It’s all part of JLR’s ambitious House of Brands strategy. Instead of treating Land Rover as the umbrella for all its SUVs, JLR is carving out four distinct sub-brands: Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar. Each gets its own identity, marketing, and—yes—bespoke branding. The new Range Rover emblem, with its minimalist double-R motif, isn’t just a cosmetic tweak. It’s a signal: Range Rover is stepping into its own spotlight, ready to stand apart in a crowded luxury market.

What Does the New Range Rover Logo Actually Mean?

Let’s talk details. The new logo features two Rs, set wide apart in a clean, modern font. It’s the first time since 1970 that Range Rover has introduced a unique emblem, and it’s not meant to replace the classic spelled-out Range Rover script you see on the front and back of every vehicle. Instead, this motif is designed for places where the full script just doesn’t fit—think labels, event spaces, or as a subtle pattern on high-end upholstery.

JLR’s design team describes it as a “smaller symbol,” perfect for those moments when you want a whisper of luxury, not a shout. It’s also a way to create a consistent, recognizable mark across everything from digital media to exclusive events. The result? Pure magic. It’s a nod to heritage, but with a foot firmly in the future.

How Does This Fit Into JLR’s House of Brands Strategy?

JLR’s House of Brands approach is a big shift. Instead of one big Land Rover family, each sub-brand gets to shine on its own. Jaguar has already rolled out its new look, and Range Rover is next in line. Defender and Discovery are expected to follow suit soon.

But here’s the twist: Land Rover isn’t disappearing. Instead, it’s becoming what JLR calls a “trust mark.” That means you’ll still see the Land Rover name on drivetrains, tech, and as a badge of rugged reliability. According to CEO Adrian Mardell, Land Rover remains “integral” to the business—think of it as the DNA running through every SUV JLR makes. The Land Rover oval will still appear on vehicles, websites, and showrooms. It’s just taking a step back from the limelight, letting the sub-brands do the talking.

Will the Classic Land Rover Oval Disappear from Range Rovers?

Short answer: No. The iconic green Land Rover oval isn’t going anywhere. While the new Range Rover motif will pop up in places where a smaller, more subtle mark is needed, the oval badge remains a key part of the brand’s identity. It’s a reassuring sign for longtime fans who value the heritage and off-road credibility Land Rover brings to the table.

In fact, the new motif is more about adding layers to the brand’s identity than replacing what works. You might spot the double-R pattern on limited-edition interiors, grille designs, or even as part of exclusive event branding. It’s about giving Range Rover a toolkit to express itself in new ways, without losing touch with its roots.

What’s Up with the New Range Rover Pattern?

Alongside the logo, JLR revealed a dedicated Range Rover pattern—a checkered design with the new R motif at its heart. While JLR hasn’t spelled out exactly how this will be used, it’s easy to imagine it showing up on everything from seat stitching to luxury accessories. Think of it as a signature—something that sets Range Rover apart from more mainstream Land Rover models.

This kind of branding move isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about creating a sense of exclusivity and belonging. When you see that pattern, you know you’re looking at something special. It’s a subtle flex, but an effective one.

How Will This Affect the Range Rover Experience?

For most drivers, the changes will be subtle but meaningful. You’ll still get the same blend of luxury, performance, and off-road prowess that’s made Range Rover a household name. But now, there’s an added layer of sophistication—a sense that you’re part of a brand with its own story to tell.

And with the first electric Range Rover on the horizon, this new branding couldn’t come at a better time. According to a 2023 report from McKinsey, luxury car buyers are increasingly looking for brands that offer both heritage and innovation. Range Rover’s new look is a clear play for that sweet spot: timeless, but never stuck in the past.

What Should You Expect Next from Range Rover?

Keep an eye out for more bespoke touches as Range Rover continues to carve out its own identity. The double-R motif and checkered pattern are just the beginning. As Defender and Discovery get their own branding updates, expect to see even more differentiation across JLR’s lineup.

The big takeaway? Reinventing a classic isn’t about perfection—it’s about smarter adjustments. Start with one change this week, and you’ll likely spot the difference by month’s end. For Range Rover, that means honoring its legacy while embracing a future where luxury and innovation go hand in hand.

First bespoke emblem for 55-year-old luxury brand as JLR advances ‘House of Brands’ strategy

JLR has revealed a bold new logo for the Range Rover brand, as it prepares to launch the luxury SUV marque’s first electric model later this year.

Appearing in a recent presentation to investors, the new emblem – featuring a pair of Rs in the brand’s trademark minimalist, wide-set font – is the first designed for Range Rover since it launched its original car in 1970.

JLR told Autocar, however, that the new badge is not intended to replace the spelled-out ‘Range Rover’ script that has adorned the front and rear of each Range Rover model since the brand’s launch.

“The Range Rover Motif has been developed as a smaller symbol for where our familiar Range Rover device mark does not fit, such as on a label or as part of a repeating pattern, and within event spaces where an emblem is more appropriate,” it said.

Range Rover has been split out as one of four JLR sub-brands – alongside Jaguar, Discovery and Defender – as part of the company’s House of Brands strategy, wherein each of those four model lines is operated as its own business, with their own bespoke branding, positioning and marketing strategies.

Jaguar has already revealed its new-era branding as part of the Type 00 concept unveiling, but Defender and Discovery have yet to receive their own bespoke badges.

As part of this strategy, the Land Rover name will take on a new role as a ‘trust mark’, the company has said, meaning it will continue to be used in reference to the drivetrains and technology in the company’s SUVs but will no longer be pitched so overtly as the parent marque.

Nonetheless, CEO Adrian Mardell has previously emphasised that Land Rover will remain an integral part of JLR’s operations and its name will continue to feature on the cars. “I really want to reiterate and put this on record that the Land Rover mark will remain,” he said, following the unveiling of the House of Brands strategy.

“Among its many attributes, Land Rover is rightly synonymous with off-road credentials, with technology capabilities, with significant and huge safety features.
