Mercedes-Benz is about to shake things up again with the third-generation GLA, set to arrive late next year. This isn’t just a routine update—Mercedes is reimagining its entry-level crossover to better compete with the likes of the Volkswagen ID.3, MG4, and the ever-popular VW Golf. So, what’s new, and why should you care? Let’s dive in.

How Is Mercedes Positioning the New GLA Against Rivals?

Mercedes isn’t shy about its ambitions. The new GLA will replace both the outgoing second-generation GLA (petrol) and the first-generation EQA (electric), bringing both hybrid and fully electric options under one sleek roof. This is a strategic move, especially as more buyers look for greener alternatives without sacrificing luxury or practicality.

The electric GLA is gunning straight for the heart of the compact EV segment, where the Volkswagen ID.3 and MG4 have made serious inroads. Meanwhile, the petrol-hybrid variant is set to take on stalwarts like the VW Golf. By offering both powertrains, Mercedes is making sure there’s a GLA for everyone—whether you’re ready to go all-in on electric or prefer the familiarity of a hybrid.

What’s Changing in Terms of Design and Space?

Let’s talk looks. Spy shots of the new GLA in testing reveal a sportier, more coupe-like silhouette. The front end is especially striking, featuring Mercedes’ new Iconic Grille—a bold design first seen on the latest GLC. It’s a clear signal that Mercedes wants the GLA to stand out, not just blend in.

But it’s not just about style. The new GLA is expected to stretch just over 4,500mm in length, up from the current model’s 4,410mm. That extra space should translate to a roomier cabin, addressing one of the main gripes with the outgoing model. For families or anyone who values comfort on longer drives, this is a welcome change.

How Will the Interior Set a New Standard?

Mercedes interiors have always been a cut above, but the new GLA is set to raise the bar even further. While we haven’t seen official photos yet, industry insiders expect the cabin to borrow heavily from the latest CLA saloon and the upcoming GLB crossover. Think a free-standing, full-width digital display, AI-powered infotainment, and higher-quality materials throughout.

One particularly interesting addition for the electric GLA: a front trunk, or frunk. This is something the current EQA lacks, and it’s a small but meaningful touch that adds practicality—especially for city dwellers who need every bit of storage they can get.

What’s Under the Hood (or Floor) of the New GLA?

Here’s where things get really interesting. The electric GLA will ride on the same 800V electrical architecture as the new CLA. This means faster charging and improved efficiency—two things EV buyers care about most. Battery options are expected to include a 58.5kWh LFP pack for affordability and an 85kWh NMC pack for those who want maximum range. Early estimates suggest a top-end range of up to 484 miles, which would put the GLA right at the front of the pack.

Powertrain choices will include both single-motor (268bhp) and dual-motor (349bhp) setups. And for those who crave performance, Mercedes has plans for at least two AMG variants featuring cutting-edge axial flux motors from British engineering firm Yasa. These are expected to land in 2027 and could redefine what we expect from a compact performance crossover.

Prefer petrol? The hybrid GLA will borrow its 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo engine from the new CLA, with outputs ranging from 134bhp to 188bhp. All versions will use an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, promising smooth shifts and solid efficiency.

How Will Production and Sustainability Factor In?

Mercedes is investing heavily in its future, and the new GLA is a big part of that. Production will take place at the recently upgraded Rastatt plant in Germany, alongside the CLA saloon. This move not only streamlines manufacturing but also supports Mercedes’ broader push toward more sustainable, efficient production methods.

Is the New GLA Worth Waiting For?

If you’re in the market for a compact crossover, the upcoming Mercedes GLA is shaping up to be a serious contender. With its blend of electric and hybrid options, bold new design, and tech-forward interior, it’s clear Mercedes is aiming to set a new benchmark in the segment. The extra space, improved range, and performance variants only sweeten the deal.

The compact crossover market is more competitive than ever, but Mercedes is betting that its next-generation GLA will stand out for all the right reasons. Whether you’re drawn by the badge, the tech, or the promise of a greener drive, this is one launch worth keeping on your radar.

Entry-level crossover will replace today’s second-generation ICE GLA and first-generation electric EQA

Mercedes-Benz will launch the third-generation GLA crossover late next year, chairman Ola Källenius has confirmed.

The smallest member of the brand’s MMA-based compact car family will be sold in both electric and hybrid forms, replacing the first-generation EQA EV and the second-generation ICE GLA.

The entry-level EV is seen as a key model for the German firm to compete with some of the best selling compact electric cars on the market, such as the Volkswagen ID 3 and MG4.
