The incoming ‘baby’ Mercedes-Benz\u00a0G-Class<\/a> will sit on a bespoke ‘ladder-frame’\u00a0platform, use \u201cnearly all unique\u201d parts and sport a design that \u201cis even more modern than the current car\u201d, bosses have said.<\/p>\n

Arriving within the next two years, the new SUV will be the entry model into a growing G-Class range as Mercedes attempts to expand ‘G’ into a brand in its own right \u2013 like JLR has done with Range Rover.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the Munich motor show<\/a>, Mercedes chairman Ola K\u00e4llenius said test mules would \u201cbe appearing on roads very soon\u201d, showing a new preview image\u00a0of the incoming model’s\u00a0rear end.<\/p>\n

The so-called\u00a0Mini G\u00a0will sit on a unique architecture, confirmed tech boss Markus Sch\u00e4fer, in order to be \u201cas authentic as possible\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cThe G is a very special, authentic car,\u00a0and the Mini G has to be authentic. So I cannot take just a platform, I cannot take an existing platform, I have to create my own.\u00a0It’s a completely new development.\u201d<\/p>\n

The platform is described by Sch\u00e4<\/span>fer<\/span> as a \u201cminiature ladder-frame chassis\u201d, which he explained was \u201cnot ladder-frame to [the current G-Class\u2019s] extent\u00a0but when it comes to suspension, when it comes to wheel size\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sch\u00e4<\/span>fer<\/span> revealed that the Mini G will use \u201ca lot\u201d of unique components, \u201cfar more than I ever wish to tell you\u201d, which includes most of the car\u2019s body.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cOver time, just looking at the car\u2019s capabilities and what’s needed, I came more and more to the conclusion that everything has to be unique, the whole upper body and everything.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“You know, I can’t even take a door handle from [the current] portfolio, because the G-Class has such unique door handles.<\/p>\n

“So we spent a lot of time tuning this car, and over time\u00a0we started to develop so many unique components to make sure it\u2019s very, very good-looking car and very capable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The current G-Class is offered with both combustion and electric power, but Autocar understands the Mini G will be sold exclusively as an EV.<\/p>\n

Asked about powertrains, especially an electric one, Sch\u00e4<\/span>fer<\/span> was coy, stating: \u201cStay tuned. I don’t want to go in to this detail.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In styling\u00a0terms, the Mini G will be a\u00a0\u201ctweaked\u201d G-Class, said Mercedes design boss Gorden Wagener, and that\u00a0will make it \u201ceven more modern\u201d than the electric G580 EQ<\/a> that was launched last year.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the design, Wagener said: \u201cYou cannot change the G much:\u00a0it\u2019s iconic. I like the new [current G-Class]:\u00a0that’s a modern G.<\/p>\n

“On the little one, we will give a slightly different tweak: a bit more sharpness, a bit younger [light] graphics but still circle. So it’s really details.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut otherwise we stick to the G, and it’s a modern G \u2013\u00a0even a touch more modern than the big one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if he wanted to go slightly more radical with the design, Wagener said the fundamentals had to stay the same:\u00a0\u201cYou have to hold yourself back and understand what the icon is about.
