The brand is gearing up to launch what’s being called the Mini G, and it’s not just a shrunken version of the original. This new SUV is set to carve out its own identity, with a bespoke ladder-frame platform and nearly all unique parts. That’s right: Mercedes isn’t just recycling old components or platforms here. They’re building this from the ground up, aiming for authenticity and capability that lives up to the G-Class legend.

Why Is Mercedes Creating a Bespoke Platform for the Mini G?

You might be wondering, why go through all the trouble of designing a new platform when you could just adapt an existing one? According to Markus Schäfer, Mercedes’ tech chief, authenticity is non-negotiable. The G-Class has always been a special breed—rugged, instantly recognizable, and engineered for real-world adventure. To capture that same spirit in a smaller package, Mercedes decided to develop a unique, “miniature ladder-frame chassis.” It’s not quite as heavy-duty as the full-size G, but it’s engineered to deliver the same sense of solidity and off-road prowess.

This approach isn’t just about nostalgia or branding. It’s about ensuring the Mini G isn’t a watered-down version of the original. Schäfer even joked that they couldn’t borrow a single door handle from the current lineup because the G-Class’s details are so distinctive. That level of attention to detail signals Mercedes’ commitment to making the Mini G feel just as special as its big brother.

How Will the Mini G Stand Out in a Crowded SUV Market?

Let’s face it: the compact SUV market is packed. But the Mini G isn’t trying to blend in. With a design that’s “even more modern than the current car,” according to Mercedes chairman Ola Källenius, the Mini G will bring a fresh twist to the G-Class’s iconic boxy silhouette. Gorden Wagener, Mercedes’ design boss, explained that while the fundamentals of the G-Class design are untouchable, the Mini G will get sharper lines and younger, more dynamic lighting graphics. Think of it as the G-Class’s cool, younger sibling—recognizably part of the family, but with its own personality.

This isn’t just about looks, either. The Mini G is expected to be an EV-only model, aligning with Mercedes’ broader push toward electrification. That’s a bold move, especially as the automotive world shifts rapidly toward electric power. While Schäfer kept details about the powertrain under wraps, the decision to go all-electric puts the Mini G in direct competition with other premium compact EVs, while still offering that unmistakable G-Class vibe.

What Does This Mean for the Future of the G-Class Brand?

Mercedes isn’t just launching a new model—they’re expanding the entire G-Class universe. The Mini G will serve as the entry point to a broader G-Class range, much like what Land Rover has done with the Range Rover lineup. And it’s not stopping there: the G-Class Cabriolet is making a comeback, adding even more variety for fans of the brand.

This strategy reflects a larger trend in the automotive industry: turning iconic models into sub-brands that cater to a wider range of customers. By offering different sizes, body styles, and powertrains, Mercedes is making the G-Class accessible to more people without diluting its core identity. It’s a smart move, especially as younger buyers look for vehicles that blend tradition with modern tech and sustainability.

How Will the Mini G Compare to Rivals Like the Defender Sport?

One of the most interesting aspects of the Mini G’s launch is its positioning against rivals like the upcoming Defender Sport from Jaguar Land Rover. Both brands are leveraging their off-road heritage to create new, more accessible models. But while the Defender Sport is expected to share much of its architecture with other JLR models, Mercedes is doubling down on uniqueness. That could give the Mini G an edge when it comes to authenticity and brand cachet.

Real-world capability will be a big selling point, too. If Mercedes can deliver a compact SUV that’s genuinely capable off-road—while also being comfortable and stylish in the city—they’ll have a winner on their hands. And with the Mini G’s bespoke platform and focus on unique components, it’s clear Mercedes is aiming high.

What Should Buyers Expect When the Mini G Arrives?

If you’re in the market for a compact luxury SUV, the Mini G is shaping up to be one of the most exciting options on the horizon. Expect a vehicle that’s unmistakably a G-Class, but with a modern twist—sharper design, electric power, and a size that’s easier to live with day-to-day. Mercedes is promising a car that’s “very, very good-looking and very capable,” and if their track record is anything to go by, they’re likely to deliver.

The Mini G is expected to hit the roads within the next two years, with test mules already on the horizon. As Mercedes continues to tease details, one thing is clear: this isn’t just another SUV. It’s a bold step forward for an icon, and a sign that even the most storied brands can evolve without losing their soul.

Key Takeaway for G-Class Fans and SUV Shoppers

The Mini G isn’t just a smaller G-Class—it’s a reimagining of what an iconic off-roader can be in the modern era. With its bespoke platform, unique design, and electric powertrain, it’s set to offer something genuinely fresh in a crowded market. For anyone who’s ever wanted the G-Class experience in a more manageable package, the wait is almost over. And for Mercedes, it’s a chance to show that innovation and tradition can go hand in hand—no compromises needed.

German rival for JLR’s upcoming Defender Sport will look like a G-Class but be almost entirely bespoke

The incoming ‘baby’ Mercedes-Benz G-Class will sit on a bespoke ‘ladder-frame’ platform, use “nearly all unique” parts and sport a design that “is even more modern than the current car”, bosses have said.

Arriving within the next two years, the new SUV will be the entry model into a growing G-Class range as Mercedes attempts to expand ‘G’ into a brand in its own right – like JLR has done with Range Rover.

That will include the return of the G-Class Cabriolet, which was announced this week.

Speaking at the Munich motor show, Mercedes chairman Ola Källenius said test mules would “be appearing on roads very soon”, showing a new preview image of the incoming model’s rear end.

The so-called Mini G will sit on a unique architecture, confirmed tech boss Markus Schäfer, in order to be “as authentic as possible”.

He said: “The G is a very special, authentic car, and the Mini G has to be authentic. So I cannot take just a platform, I cannot take an existing platform, I have to create my own. It’s a completely new development.”

The platform is described by Schäfer as a “miniature ladder-frame chassis”, which he explained was “not ladder-frame to [the current G-Class’s] extent but when it comes to suspension, when it comes to wheel size”.

Schäfer revealed that the Mini G will use “a lot” of unique components, “far more than I ever wish to tell you”, which includes most of the car’s body.

He said: “Over time, just looking at the car’s capabilities and what’s needed, I came more and more to the conclusion that everything has to be unique, the whole upper body and everything.

“You know, I can’t even take a door handle from [the current] portfolio, because the G-Class has such unique door handles.

“So we spent a lot of time tuning this car, and over time we started to develop so many unique components to make sure it’s very, very good-looking car and very capable.”

The current G-Class is offered with both combustion and electric power, but Autocar understands the Mini G will be sold exclusively as an EV.

Asked about powertrains, especially an electric one, Schäfer was coy, stating: “Stay tuned. I don’t want to go in to this detail.”

In styling terms, the Mini G will be a “tweaked” G-Class, said Mercedes design boss Gorden Wagener, and that will make it “even more modern” than the electric G580 EQ that was launched last year.

Speaking about the design, Wagener said: “You cannot change the G much: it’s iconic. I like the new [current G-Class]: that’s a modern G.

“On the little one, we will give a slightly different tweak: a bit more sharpness, a bit younger [light] graphics but still circle. So it’s really details.

“But otherwise we stick to the G, and it’s a modern G – even a touch more modern than the big one.”

Asked if he wanted to go slightly more radical with the design, Wagener said the fundamentals had to stay the same: “You have to hold yourself back and understand what the icon is about. We strive for iconic design, and there is not such an iconic piece like the G, right?”

[2,137

0":"post-69601","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-featured","8":"category-news
["GET
