When it first hit the streets in 2022, it was a bit of a trailblazer—one of Renault’s first truly modern EVs. Fast forward a few years, and the story isn’t quite as rosy. Sales have dropped off a cliff—down 67% in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year, according to Renault’s own figures. That’s a huge dip, especially for a car that started strong.

So, what’s behind the slump? Part of it comes down to competition from Renault’s own stable. The newer, more affordable Renault 4 and 5 have been flying off the shelves, outselling the Megane more than three to one. It’s a classic case of sibling rivalry, but with real consequences for the brand’s flagship hatchback.

Renault’s answer? Give the Megane a bold new identity. CEO Fabrice Cambolive has made it clear: the next Megane isn’t just getting a facelift—it’s being reborn as a “hot car.” In other words, Renault wants to inject some excitement and desirability back into the Megane, positioning it as a sporty, head-turning EV rather than just another practical hatchback.

What Changes Can Buyers Expect in the Next Megane?

Let’s get into the nitty-gritty. While Renault’s top brass have been tight-lipped about all the details, a few key upgrades are already in the works.

First up: the battery. The current Megane’s range has been decent, but not groundbreaking. That’s about to change. The refreshed model is expected to borrow the 91kWh battery pack from the larger Renault Scenic. In the Scenic, this setup delivers up to 379 miles of range—an 87-mile improvement over the most efficient Megane currently on sale. For anyone who’s ever worried about range anxiety, that’s a serious upgrade.

But Renault knows that a bigger battery alone won’t cut it. Laurens van den Acker, Renault Group’s design chief, put it bluntly: “If you put a new battery in the car, which is very expensive, and you don’t change the car, then it’s really hard pressed to seduce people to pay more or anything for it.” So, the Megane is getting a major visual overhaul too.

Expect a new grille, updated daytime running lights, and a lower, wider stance. The goal? To make the Megane look as sporty and dynamic as it feels to drive. Renault wants this car to stand out—not just as an EV, but as a genuinely exciting hot hatch.

How Will the New Megane Stand Out in a Crowded EV Market?

Let’s face it: the electric car market is getting crowded. Every major brand is rolling out new models, and buyers have more choices than ever. So, why should anyone care about the Megane’s transformation?

For starters, Renault is betting that there’s a gap in the market for a truly sporty, stylish electric hatchback. Most EVs today focus on efficiency, practicality, or luxury. Very few aim to deliver the kind of driving excitement that hot hatches are famous for. By giving the Megane a performance-oriented makeover, Renault is hoping to tap into a new audience—drivers who want an EV that’s as fun as it is functional.

There’s also a broader trend at play. According to a 2024 report from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, EV buyers are increasingly looking for cars that reflect their personality and lifestyle—not just their environmental values. That means design, performance, and brand image are becoming just as important as range and charging speed.

Renault’s move to reposition the Megane as a “hot car” is a direct response to this shift. It’s about making electric cars desirable, not just sensible.

What Does This Mean for Pricing and Availability?

Of course, all these upgrades come at a cost. The new Megane is expected to arrive in the middle of next year, and it’ll likely carry a premium over the current model’s £32,495 starting price. That’s not pocket change, but Renault is betting that buyers will be willing to pay more for a car that stands out from the crowd.

If you’re in the market for an electric hatchback and want something with a bit more flair, it might be worth waiting to see what Renault has up its sleeve. The combination of improved range, bold styling, and a sportier driving experience could make the new Megane a compelling choice.

Is This the Start of a New Era for Electric Hot Hatches?

Renault’s decision to reinvent the Megane isn’t just about saving one model—it could signal a broader shift in how automakers approach electric cars. For years, EVs have been marketed primarily on their green credentials. Now, brands are starting to realize that excitement and emotion matter just as much.

If the new Megane delivers on its promises, it could pave the way for a new generation of electric hot hatches—cars that are as thrilling to drive as they are environmentally friendly. And for drivers who’ve been waiting for an EV that truly stirs the soul, that’s a pretty exciting prospect.

The bottom line? Renault is taking a bold gamble with the Megane, but it’s one that could pay off in a big way. If you love the idea of a sporty, stylish EV that doesn’t compromise on range or fun, keep your eyes peeled for the Megane’s next chapter. It might just change the way you think about electric cars.

Refresh is part of effort to revive hatch after sales began to dive earlier this year

Renault will give the Megane a radical “hot hatch” facelift next year, in an effort to revive the EV’s stark downturn in sales.

The current Megane launched in 2022 as one of the first of Renault new-age electric cars.

While successful at first, after four years sales have dipped rapidly: down 67% (to 10,082) in the first half of 2025 compared to the year before.

This has coincided with the brand launching newer – and cheaper – EVs in the Renault 4 and 5 within the past year, which have racked up more than three times the hatch’s sale.

Now, Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive has confirmed they want to reposition the Megane as a “hot car”.

Speaking at the launch of the new Clio at the Munich motor show, he said: “Megane E-Tech was our first, first, real EV car since the beginning of ‘Renaulution’. It was launched at a moment where the EV [uptake] was not so high.

“Now, what we are looking for is to have a hot hatch or a hot car. That’s the direction we want to go in.”

While he was coy on any technical specifics, Cambolive said the car will get a larger battery – and this is likely to be the 91kWh pack used in the larger Scenic. In that car, it offers up to 379 miles of range, up 87 miles on the most efficient current Megane.

This need to refresh the hatch was backed by Renault Group design boss Laurens van den Acker, who admitted “we need to sell more of it”.

To do that, he added: “We need to do something. If you put a new battery in the car, which is very expensive, and you don’t change the car, then it’s really hard pressed to seduce people to pay more or anything for it.

“So we needed to do justify to change underneath the skin by showing something on the skin. And then we thought that what the world was missing was kind of a hot-looking EV.

“And so we thought we had nothing to lose, so we’ll just push that.”

Autocar understands the facelift will involve a new grille, fresh daytime running lights and a lower and wider stance, although van den Acker would not be drawn into specifics.

The new Megane will arrive in the middle of next year, likely holding a premium over the current car’s £32,495 starting price.

[2,137

0":"post-69631","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-featured","8":"category-news
["GET
