That\u2019s never a good situation. In the future, electrification will play a very important role in transportation, but it won\u2019t be the only part. What happens will vary according to region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Ford, we\u2019ve invested in all of these clean technologies, and I feel good about that. But it\u2019s down to customers. For reference, the new electric <a href=\"\/car-review\/ford\/puma-gen-e\">Puma Gen-E<\/a>, priced at around \u00a326k, drove a 324% year-on-year uptick in Ford\u2019s UK electric vehicle sales in the first half of 2025 \u2013 demonstrating the importance of maintaining an affordable entry point into each segment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is currently a circa-\u00a314k gap between the electric Puma and Explorer, and it is in here that the\u00a0new crossover is expected to be pitched, lining it up as a rival to the likes of the <a href=\"\/car-review\/volkswagen\/tiguan\">Volkswagen Tiguan<\/a>, <a href=\"\/car-review\/kia\/sportage\">Kia Sportage<\/a> and <a href=\"\/car-review\/hyundai\/tucson\">Hyundai Tucson<\/a> \u2013 some of Europe\u2019s best-selling cars \u2013 with a starting price in the mid-\u00a330,000s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A return to the glory days of the mid-1990s, when Ford dominated the European market with the wildly popular Escort, Fiesta and <a href=\"\/car-review\/ford\/mondeo\">Mondeo<\/a> \u2013 claiming a share of around 12% \u2013 is unrealistic. Today, the firm has around a third of that figure, has axed the Fiesta and Focus and must face off against a far greater number of rivals in all segments these days \u2013 but <a href=\"\/car-review\/renault\">Renault<\/a>\u2019s 6.7% share would seem a viable target.<\/p>\n<p>Distinctive designs and dynamics play a central role in Ford\u2019s ploy to grow again in Europe, so the new Valencia-built SUV will be styled according to the company\u2019s bold new American-flavoured design principles, and engineered to give driving characteristics that major on engaging handling and\u00a0refinement \u2013 attributes that have long helped Ford\u2019s cars claim an edge over rivals in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The company, like many other European marques, is looking to leverage its strong heritage in the region and the brand\u2019s defining qualities \u2013 as part of a bid to keep <a href=\"\/car-news\/best-cars\/chinese-cars\">new Chinese rivals<\/a> at bay \u2013 and that extends to the redeployment of historic, familiar nameplates such as Capri and Explorer.<\/p>\n<p>Ford has given no indication of what the new multi-energy car could be called, but has recently filed to trademark terms including Fuze, Mythic and Hive, which some reports have suggested could be used for upcoming new models.<\/p>\n<p>However, given the firm\u2019s strategy of retaining existing badges, it is more likely any new Europe-focused hatchback would bring back a previously used moniker \u2013 and given it will effectively fi ll the gap in the line-up left by the departing Focus, that name would seem a logical fit.<\/p>\n<p>In the past few years, the company has also renewed the rights to names such as Zephyr, Orion, Granada and Cortina.<\/p>\n<h2>Ford&#8217;s European problem<\/h2>\n<p>The Blue Oval\u2019s eponymous executive chairman Bill Ford hinted at a forthcoming shift in strategy for the company\u2019s European car business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, of course we\u2019ll go on [in Europe]. On the passenger car side, we realise we\u2019re not as robust as we need to be,\u201d he admitted, but added: \u201cWe\u2019re working on our future strategy right now. But I think you\u2019ll be surprised \u2013 pleasantly surprised \u2013 by what\u2019s coming.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He gave no indication\u00a0of what changes would be made, but recent developments all point to the company reversing its EV-led shift upmarket in a bid to regrow its share of the local market.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Ford suggested that his company\u2019s original strategy of rapid total electrification in Europe was underpinned by the general consensus that market demand for EVs would rapidly accelerate throughout the 2020s on the way to a mandated shift to pure-EVs in the middle of the next decade \u2013 a trend that has ultimately been much slower than forecast.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Ford\u2019s then EV boss Marin Gjaja (now its chief strategy officer) told Autocar last year that the plan to totally electrify its European passenger cars by 2030 had proved \u201ctoo ambitious\u201d, and Ford \u2013 like many other manufacturers including <a href=\"\/car-review\/volvo\">Volvo<\/a>, Renault and various Stellantis brands \u2013 had slowed its all-EV ambitions in light of sustained demand\u00a0for combustion cars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Introducing a new \u2018multi-energy\u2019 offering with a mix of combustion and EV powertrains will allow Ford to cater to evolving market demands while it transitions to a pure-electric future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>US experiment<\/h2>\n<p>Ford recently laid the groundwork for a global fightback with confirmation that it would launch a <a href=\"\/car-news\/new-cars\/ford-launch-new-range-affordable-evs-starting-2027\">new family of affordable EVs in the US<\/a> from 2027, all based on the new Universal EV Platform (UEVP) and built at its factory in Kentucky. A $30k (\u00a322k) pick-up for the American market will be the first, but the company will leverage the platform\u2019s modularity by also using it for hatchbacks, crossovers, small vans and large SUVs.<\/p>\n<p>CEO Jim Farley said it will export these US-built EVs to other global markets \u2013 \u201cfrom Louisville to the world\u201d \u2013 but any Europe-focused smaller models are likely to be built locally on this side of the Atlantic, as with the Valencia-built SUV, given the need to minimise costs and the differing market demands here. The UEVP architecture has also been engineered to accommodate exclusively electric power, so will be wholly distinct from the C2 platform Ford uses here.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, headlines of Ford\u2019s landmark US announcements could have international implications.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the major strategy announcement in Kentucky recently \u2013 referred to as a \u2018Model T moment\u2019 \u2013 Ford gave details of the new factory model it will use to build its new-generation EVs: the Ford Universal EV Production System. This will essentially replace the traditional linear assembly line with three primary branches, giving an \u2018assembly tree\u2019 that will assemble the front, rear and central structures of a car simultaneously. These major components will be formed from large, single-piece aluminium unicastings, which Ford says replace \u201cdozens of smaller parts\u201d, and require 25% fewer fasteners.<\/p>\n<p>We tore up the moving assembly line concept and designed a better one,\u201d said Farley, highlighting that the more efficient build process will be a signifi cant factor in reducing the cost of these new-gen cars, with Ford claiming it will allow for 40% fewer workstations in the factory and boost production times by 15%.<\/p>\n<p>If the move is successful, there is a strong likelihood that Ford could roll out the new production model globally, which would have huge implications for its European business.
