The incoming \u2018baby\u2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class<\/a> will sit on a bespoke ladder-frame platform, use \u201cnearly all unique\u201d parts and sport a design that \u201cis even more modern than the current car\u201d, bosses have said.<\/p>\n

The new SUV will arrive within the next two years and will be the entry point to what is planned to be a new range of models, with Mercedes turning the G-Class into a brand in its own right \u2013 in much the same way JLR has done with Range Rover<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the Munich show, Mercedes<\/a> CEO Ola K\u00e4llenius said test mules would be appearing on roads \u201cvery soon\u201d. A new preview image of the incoming model\u2019s rear end was also revealed.<\/p>\n

The \u2018Mini G\u2019 will be based on a unique architecture, confirmed tech boss Markus Sch\u00e4fer, in order to be \u201cas authentic as possible\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThe G is a very special, authentic car, and the Mini G has to be authentic. So I cannot take just a platform, I cannot take an existing platform \u2013 I have to create my own. It\u2019s a completely new development.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sch\u00e4fer called the platform a \u201cminiature ladder-frame chassis\u201d, which he described as\u00a0being \u201cnot ladder-frame [to the G-Class\u2019s] extent\u201d, but with similar qualities \u201cwhen it comes to suspension and wheel size\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sch\u00e4fer also revealed that the Mini G will use a signifi cant number of unique components, \u201cfar more than I ever wish to tell you\u201d. These include most of the model\u2019s bodywork.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cOver time, just looking at the car\u2019s capabilities and what\u2019s needed, I came to the conclusion that everything has to be unique, the whole upper body and everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, I can\u2019t even take a door handle from [the current] portfolio, because the G-Class has such unique door handles.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we spent a lot of time tuning this car, and over time we started to develop so many unique components to make sure it\u2019s a very good-looking\u00a0car and very capable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The current G-Class is offered with both combustion engines and electric power, but Autocar understands the Mini G will be sold exclusively as an EV.<\/p>\n

Asked about powertrains, especially an electric one, Sch\u00e4fer was coy, stating: \u201cStay tuned. I don\u2019t want to go in to this detail.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mini G\u2019s styling will be that of a \u201ctweaked\u201d G-Class, according to Mercedes design boss Gorden Wagener, which will make it \u201ceven more modern\u201d than the electric G580 EQ that was launched last year.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the design, Wagener said: \u201cYou cannot change the G much: it\u2019s iconic. I like the new [current G-Class]: that\u2019s a modern G.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the little one, we will give a slight tweak: a bit more sharpness, a bit younger [headlight] graphics but still circle. So really it\u2019s details.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut otherwise we stick to the G, and it\u2019s a modern G \u2013 even a touch more modern than the big one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if he wanted to be slightly more radical with the design, Wagener said the fundamentals had to stay the same: \u201cYou have to hold yourself back and understand what the icon is about.
