At £28,995, the B05 positions itself below rivals such as the Cupra Born and Renault Megane E-Tech, offering a 300-mile WLTP range and rapid charging capability (30-80% in 17 minutes at up to 174kW). On paper, these specifications appear to disrupt prevailing price-performance expectations. However, the evidence for a true paradigm shift remains provisional. The B05’s competitive edge is contingent on the accuracy of WLTP range claims under real-world driving conditions—a metric that, as numerous independent tests have shown, can be subject to significant variance depending on climate, driving style, and battery conditioning. Moreover, the single-trim, high-equipment strategy—panoramic sunroof, 19-inch alloys, and a 14.6-inch infotainment screen—suggests a calculated attempt to appeal to cost-conscious buyers seeking premium features, yet this approach may obscure potential trade-offs in areas such as aftersales support, long-term durability, and residual value, domains where established European brands retain structural advantages.

What Distinguishes the B05’s Engineering and Design Choices?

The B05’s technical architecture reflects both convergence with and divergence from mainstream European EV design. Its cell-to-chassis battery integration, for instance, allows for a lower cabin floor than typical skateboard platforms, theoretically improving both handling and interior ergonomics. The rear-mounted, 215bhp permanent magnet synchronous motor delivers rear-wheel drive—a configuration more commonly associated with performance-oriented models. The 6.7-second 0-62mph time is competitive, though not class-leading, and the 67.1kWh battery aligns with segment norms. Yet, the B05’s MacPherson front and multi-link rear suspension, reportedly co-tuned with Stellantis for European tastes, raises questions about the depth of this collaboration: is this a superficial calibration or a substantive reengineering? Without independent, long-term assessments on European roads, claims of “matching European expectations” should be regarded as aspirational rather than established fact.

Stylistically, the B05’s resemblance to the Volkswagen Golf is neither accidental nor derivative; rather, it signals Leapmotor’s intent to anchor its offering within a familiar design vernacular while introducing distinctive elements—frameless doors, for example, are rare at this price point and may appeal to buyers seeking subtle markers of distinction. However, such features can also introduce new vectors of risk, particularly in terms of noise insulation and repair costs, which may not become apparent until the vehicle is subjected to the rigors of daily use in the UK climate.

How Does the B05’s User Experience Compare to Segment Norms?

Initial impressions of the B05’s interior suggest a pragmatic blend of utility and modernity. The 14.6-inch HD touchscreen and 8.8-inch driver display are visually impressive, yet the reliance on digital controls for core functions—while fashionable—may not align with all user preferences, especially given the limited physical buttons and the reportedly constrained steering wheel adjustment. The materials, described as hard-wearing rather than premium, reinforce the B05’s value orientation, but this may limit its appeal among buyers for whom tactile quality remains non-negotiable. The 345-litre boot and generous cabin space indicate a thoughtful approach to packaging, though the absence of certain features (such as the fold-out tray table in export models) highlights the ongoing process of adapting Chinese-market vehicles for European tastes.

The standard equipment list is notably generous, with only interior color as an option. This simplicity streamlines the buying process but may also restrict personalization—a factor that has become increasingly salient in the European market. The B05’s ride and handling, based on limited test track exposure, appear competent, but the lack of comprehensive, independent road testing in varied conditions precludes definitive judgments about its dynamic character or the real-world efficacy of its advanced driver assistance systems.

What Are the Broader Implications for the UK and European EV Market?

The B05’s entry into the UK market is emblematic of a broader structural shift: the increasing incursion of Chinese manufacturers into segments historically dominated by European incumbents. This development carries both promise and uncertainty. On one hand, increased competition may accelerate innovation and exert downward pressure on prices, benefiting consumers. On the other, the long-term viability of new entrants hinges on factors that extend beyond initial specifications—namely, the robustness of dealer networks, the transparency of warranty and service arrangements, and the ability to adapt to evolving regulatory and consumer expectations.

Furthermore, the B05’s partnership with Stellantis for distribution signals a pragmatic recognition of these challenges, yet the durability of such alliances remains to be tested. The risk, for early adopters, is that aggressive pricing and feature-rich specifications may mask latent costs—whether in terms of depreciation, parts availability, or software support—that only become apparent over time.

Should Informed Buyers Consider the Leapmotor B05?

For buyers whose priorities are defined by value, range, and equipment, the B05 presents a compelling—if still somewhat speculative—alternative to established models. Its pricing and specification disrupt the status quo, but the absence of a long-term track record in the UK market introduces a degree of risk that should not be underestimated. The prudent course is to weigh the B05’s apparent advantages against the structural uncertainties that attend any new market entrant, particularly one operating at the intersection of rapid technological change and evolving consumer expectations. The B05 may not yet redefine the segment, but it signals that the boundaries of value and innovation in the electric hatchback market are far from settled.

New mid-sized electric hatchback is a value-focused Cupra Born rival – but is it up to the task?

The Leapmotor B05 electric hatchback will arrive in UK showrooms in July, priced from £28,995.

Undercutting the rival Cupra Born and Renault Megane, it offers an official range of 300 miles and can be charged at up to 174kW, giving a 30-80% refill time of 17 minutes.

It sends 215bhp and 177lb ft through its rear wheels for a competitive 0-62mph sprint time of 6.7sec.

The B05 will be offered in just one trim level, bringing a panoramic sunroof, 19in alloy wheels, electrically adjustable front seats and a 14.6in infotainment touchscreen that controls many key functions.

Autocar has already had an early taste of the B05 in its native China. Our first impressions can be read below:

Leapmotor B05: China’s Golf shows signs of promise

In China, the Leapmotor B05 electric hatchback is called the Lafa 5 – the only model in the firm’s rapidly growing line-up with a ‘proper’ name. What pressing corporate strategy underpins that decision? Apparently company founder Jangling Zhu thought it sounded nice.

That’s according to Tianshu Xin, CEO of Leapmotor International, the joint venture with Stellantis that distributes the firm’s cars internationally. He says Zhu “wanted something different” because “this car is very sporty and aimed at different customers”.

Disappointingly, the Lafa 5 has been rebranded the B05 for international markets so that it fits more logically into the line-up alongside the similarly sized B10 SUV. Although ‘B’ is used by Leapmotor for what are traditionally C-segment models, so make of that what you will.

Regardless of its name, a short early taste of the B05 on a Chinese test track suggests Zhu is right that this is a different propositio from the firm’s other models – and one not without some appeal.

Measuring just under 4.5m long with a wheelbase of 2.7m, the B05 sits in classic Volkswagen Golf family hatchback territory – although as an EV with a rear-mounted motor powering the back axle, the Volkswagen ID 3 Neo is a more direct comparison.

But I mention the Golf because there are definite hints of Wolfsburg’s finest in the styling of the B05. No bad thing, I’d say. It’s actually quite pleasant up close and definitely not another generic Chinese offering.

The standard B05 is offered with a range of power outputs and battery sizes, although the UK will only take the most powerful version with the biggest battery. That means it will offer 215bhp of power, yielding a 0-62mph time of 6.7sec, with a 67.1kWh battery giving a range of 300 miles on the WLTP test cycle. Efficiency officially averages 3.91mpkWh and it can be fast charged at up to 170kW. That’s competitive for a car of this class.

The B05 features Leapmotor’s ‘cell-to-chassis’ battery pack, which is integrated into the car’s structure, allowing the cabin to sit a bit lower to the ground than some skateboard-platform EVs.

It has MacPherson suspension struts up front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear, and Leapmotor claims the chassis has been co-tuned with Stellantis to match European expectations.

The B05 also has frameless doors, which are somewhat rare on a car of this class and price point. Leapmotor seems very proud of them, and they do add a touch of class.

Inside, there’s a big 14.6in HD touchscreen and an 8.8in LCD driver display. My test car was in full Chinese spec, and my Mandarin wasn’t good enough to delve through every sub-menu, but through the screen you can set the drive modes (Normal, Eco and Sport) and adjust the brake regen and steering speed.

There aren’t as many buttons as I’d like, although key controls are at least hard-coded to the bottom of the touchscreen. I’d have liked more steering wheel adjustment, especially since the driver display seemed to be mounted unusually close to the wheel.

But it’s otherwise a comfortable place to sit. It’s light, thanks to a panoramic sunroof, and the materials feel hard-wearing, if not exactly premium. There’s plentiful storage, the front and rear seats are comfortable, there’s a 345-litre boot and there’s a notable amount of space in both the front and back of the cabin.

My test car featured a few quirks, such as a fold-out tray table on the passenger side of the dashboard, which probably won’t reach the UK.

It’s worth noting the generous kit list is standard. The only option will be a choice of interior colours – and even then the choice will be light or dark grey.

I won’t pretend that a few laps of a short Chinese test track are enough to form any definitive impressions of the B05’s dynamics (or how its ADAS functions might function in the real world), but it’s clear there’s some potential here – if you keep expectations in check.

This isn’t a rocketship EV under acceleration, but it’s responsive enough, and its handling is quite direct. It maintained reasonable composure when trying to corner vigorously, with body roll kept reasonably in check. Over speed bumps and a cobbled section, the ride held up well.

UK pricing is yet to be finalised, but the B10 starts from a shade under £30,000, so you can slot this in below that. Which could make it a tempting prospect as an affordable alternative to the likes of the ID3 Neo, Cupra Born and Renault Megane.

Verdict

The B05 adds a whiff of dynamism to the Leapmotor formula. It feels unlikely to match class leaders, but stylish design and plenty of kit could make it a tempting budget alternative.

Leapmotor B05: Specification

Price

£28,995

Engine

Permanent magnet synchronous motor

Power

215bhp

Torque

177lb ft

Gearbox

1-spd reduction, RWD

Kerb weight

1700kg (est)

0-62mph

6.7sec

Top speed

na

Battery

67.1kWh (total)

Range, economy

300 miles, 3.91mpkWh

CO2, tax band

0g/km, 4%

[2,137

post-71992","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-featured","category-news
["GET
