Ultimately, BYD\u2019s Flash network is less a technological inevitability than a strategic gambit\u2014one whose success will depend as much on institutional negotiation and ecosystem alignment as on engineering prowess.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/car-news\/electric-cars\/byd-launches-1500kw-flash-charging-uk-and-it-could-cost-just-50p-kwh\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/byd-flash-charging-challenges-tesla-with-faster-cheaper-ev-network-expansion-in-the-uk.jpg\" width=\"190\" height=\"125\" alt=\"IMG 5003\" title=\"IMG 5003\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>BYD&#8217;s answer to the Tesla Supercharger can refill an EV&#8217;s battery in minutes and could be much cheaper too<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"\/car-reviews\/byd\">BYD<\/a>\u00a0plans to install 300<span>\u00a0ultra-rapid 1500kW\u00a0chargers in the UK by the end of next year<\/span>\u00a0&#8211; and it could charge far less than rival providers, despite offering speeds several times higher.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Flash chargers are BYD&#8217;s self-developed\u00a0answer to <a href=\"\/car-reviews\/tesla\">Tesla<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0Supercharger network\u00a0&#8211; and will quickly start to rival it for coverage, with around 3000 units planned to be installed across Europe by 2027.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese company said this rapid roll-out (focused\u00a0on high-traffic areas and motorways)\u00a0will result in there being a Flash charger roughly every 50km,\u00a0or 31 miles.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently around 20,000 Superchargers in operation in Europe, spread across 1500 sites.<\/p>\n<p>Flash chargers are far more powerful than Superchargers, with their peak output of 1500kW\u00a0representing a three-fold increase on the fastest of Tesla&#8217;s devices.<\/p>\n<p>However, while Flash devices are compatible with all EVs equipped with a standard CCS charging port, the maximum output can be achieved only by certain BYD-made cars equipped with two charging ports \u2013 starting with\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"\/car-reviews\/denza\/z9-gt\">Denza Z9 GT<\/a> shooting brake, due here in September.<\/p>\n<p>Future additions to the European Denza line-up, including the B5 SUV and D9 MPV,\u00a0will also be equipped with Flash charging compatibility, because they use the new second generation of BYD\u2019s Blade battery technology.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no word yet on when the tech will trickle down to the mainstream BYD range.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At top speed,\u00a0a Flash charger can take the Z9 from 10-70% capacity in just five minutes\u00a0and on to 97% in only another four minutes, claims BYD &#8211; and even in extremely cold temperatures (-30deg C)\u00a0it will need <span>only\u00a0<\/span>another three minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The locations of the first UK Flash chargers\u00a0remain unconfirmed, but BYD has said the nation&#8217;s first Denza customers will benefit from 18 months of free Flash charging &#8211; similar to the free Supercharging offer Tesla gave to early Model S buyers.<\/p>\n<p>Flash chargers take their power from on-site batteries, which will be filled overnight via the grid at off-peak prices.
