This juxtaposition is not merely cosmetic. The evidence suggests that BMW is hedging its bets, seeking to reassure its established customer base while gesturing toward a future increasingly defined by electrification and digital sophistication. The retention of the CLAR platform—albeit with incremental dimensional growth—underscores a structural conservatism. While the Neue Klasse design language and shared suspension upgrades with the forthcoming iX5 electric variant hint at a willingness to evolve, the core mechanicals remain resolutely anchored in the brand’s recent past.

This approach raises a fundamental question: is BMW’s strategy a prudent calibration of risk, or does it betray a certain inertia in the face of accelerating technological change? The answer is nuanced. For many buyers, the continuity of the 3.0-litre straight-six powertrains—now offered as mild-hybrid petrol, mild-hybrid diesel, and plug-in hybrid petrol—represents a form of product reliability that is not easily dismissed. Yet, as rival manufacturers, particularly from China, push the boundaries of plug-in hybrid and electric range, the X5’s evolutionary stance may soon appear less like reassurance and more like reticence.

What Are the Practical Implications of the X5’s Powertrain Choices?

The new X5’s powertrain lineup, while broad on paper, is marked by incremental rather than transformative change. The mild-hybrid petrol variant, now labeled 40 xDrive, sees a modest power increase from 375bhp to 394bhp, with torque holding steady at 398lb ft. Such figures, while competitive, do not fundamentally alter the driving experience for most users. The eight-speed automatic gearbox remains a model of refinement, and the straight-six engine’s character—torquey, eager to rev, and acoustically satisfying (albeit with digital augmentation)—continues to define the X5’s appeal.

However, the plug-in hybrid 50e xDrive illustrates the limits of BMW’s current approach. Despite claims of improved battery protection and marginally greater efficiency, the essential specifications—308bhp from the engine, 194bhp from the electric motor, 18.7kWh battery, and approximately 60 miles of electric range—remain largely unchanged. This static profile is increasingly conspicuous as competitors introduce PHEVs with substantially greater electric-only performance. The evidence from early test drives suggests that while the transition between electric and combustion modes is smoother, the overall experience does not meaningfully advance the segment. For consumers attuned to the rapid progress in electrification, this could signal stagnation rather than stability.

How Does the X5’s Chassis Technology Shape the Driving Experience?

BMW’s selective deployment of advanced chassis technologies—such as active anti-roll bars and four-wheel steering—reflects a targeted, rather than comprehensive, approach to dynamic enhancement. These features, available on higher-spec variants, do not radically alter the X5’s fundamental character but do provide tangible benefits. The active anti-roll bars, for example, prioritize ride comfort over outright handling gains, disconnecting during straight-line cruising to allow greater suspension articulation. Four-wheel steering, meanwhile, introduces a measure of agility and low-speed maneuverability without the disconcerting detachment sometimes observed in rival systems.

Yet, these refinements are not universally available across the range, and their impact is contingent on specific driving scenarios. The practical significance, therefore, is bounded: for the majority of users, the X5 will feel broadly similar to its predecessor—comfortable, composed, but not transformative. The weight distribution and low center of gravity in the iX5 electric variant, by contrast, yield a more planted feel, suggesting that the full potential of the platform may only be realized in its all-electric guise.

Who Stands to Gain or Lose from BMW’s Incrementalism?

The X5’s evolutionary update is likely to satisfy existing customers who value continuity, mechanical refinement, and brand prestige. For these buyers, the absence of radical change is a feature, not a bug. However, the evidence points to a growing cohort of consumers—particularly in younger demographics and rapidly electrifying markets—who may find the X5’s conservative engineering less compelling. The risk is not immediate obsolescence but a gradual erosion of relevance as expectations shift.

There are also second-order consequences that merit attention. By maintaining a largely unchanged plug-in hybrid system, BMW may be ceding technological leadership to more aggressive competitors. This could have downstream effects on residual values, regulatory compliance (especially in jurisdictions tightening emissions standards), and the brand’s broader innovation narrative.

To What Extent Does the X5’s Value Proposition Remain Competitive?

The projected price point of approximately £85,000 positions the X5 squarely among established rivals such as the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Porsche Cayenne. On paper, its blend of performance, comfort, and brand cachet remains compelling. However, the methodological boundaries of such comparisons are clear: headline figures—power, acceleration, fuel economy—do not capture the full spectrum of user experience, nor do they account for the accelerating pace of change in digital and electric vehicle technology.

Assuming pricing remains stable, the X5’s commercial prospects appear robust in the near term. Yet, this interpretation remains contested. Should competitors continue to outpace BMW in areas such as electric range, digital integration, or advanced driver assistance, the X5’s appeal may become increasingly contingent on brand loyalty rather than intrinsic product superiority.

What Should the Informed Reader Conclude?

The new BMW X5, in its current form, is a study in calculated restraint. Its evolutionary design and mechanical updates are likely to reassure traditionalists but may leave innovation-minded buyers underwhelmed. The evidence suggests that BMW is prioritizing continuity over disruption, a strategy that carries both short-term security and long-term risk. For readers seeking a large SUV that balances refinement, performance, and familiarity, the X5 remains a credible—if not groundbreaking—choice. Those for whom technological leadership and future-proofing are paramount, however, may find more compelling alternatives elsewhere. The real test will come not from the X5’s existing customer base, but from the shifting expectations of the next generation of premium SUV buyers.

New-era styling and cabin but familiar mechanicals for the new ICE SUV

A new generation of BMW’s seminal large SUV is coming, and the big news is that there will be an electric BMW iX5 with a 141kWh battery, but have no fear: there will be a fulsome range of other powertrains as well.

The exact model line-up has yet to be announced, but the core will remain a set of 3.0-litre straight-six powertrains: a mild-hybrid petrol, a mild-hybrid diesel and a plug-in hybrid petrol. We expect a more powerful M60 PHEV to join the range, as well as a hot X5 M with the same powertrain as the M5. For now, things are nice and simple.

The ICE X5 adopts the same smooth Neue Klasse styling as the iX5, and will also get all the same structural and suspension upgrades. It sticks with the outgoing generation‘s CLAR platform, but grows a bit in all directions. For all the details, have a look at the full review of the iX5. Here, I’ll just go over the differences for the petrol and plug-in hybrid models.

We don’t have any details about the diesel yet, but it won’t be too different from the current xDrive30d and xDrive40d.

The petrol 40 xDrive (yes, they’ve turned the naming formula around between generations just to confuse you) uses the latest evolution of the ‘B58’ engine with a bit more grunt than before, going from 375bhp to 394bhp. Torque remains at 398lb ft.

It’s still a brilliant engine: torquey, happy to rev and with a natural straight-six sound (even if it is augmented by the speakers).

In the hard-working development car that I sampled, there was a bit of vibration and the start/stop system was a little jerky. Once on the move, though, the eight-speed automatic gearbox was smooth and responsive on the paddles.

On the normal air suspension, it feels similar to the current X5, which is to say broadly comfortable but slightly more wooden and connected than some of the more magic-carpet options in the class.

On the surface, the 50e xDrive’s PHEV drivetrain hasn’t changed from the previous generation. The vital specs are the same: 308bhp from the engine, 194bhp from the electric motor, 18.7kWh battery for around 60 miles of electric range.

The engineers say the cells are different internally and the motor is slightly more efficient, there’s more armour on the bottom of the battery to protect it from being punctured, and the handover between electric and engine-on running is smoother than before, but I can’t help being disappointed that they haven’t managed to take it to the next level.

While BMW says that its customers are happy with the current PHEV’s electric performance, it’s beginning to look a bit last-generation, given the way some of the Chinese players are starting to offer EV power and range in their PHEVs.

On electric power alone, it’s possible to accelerate to motorway speeds and up to 87mph, just not very quickly. It’s only when the six-cylinder engine fires up that you’re getting the power and soundscape that’s worth paying for.

My test car had the active anti-roll bars and four-wheel steering, and they do enhance the experience. The point of the active anti-roll bars seems less to improve the handling and more to benefit comfort, because when you’re just driving in a more or less straight line they can be disconnected to give the suspension freedom to move. The result is a noticeably smoother ride than on the mild hybrid and iX5 EV that lacked them. The rear-steering adds some agility and low-speed manoeuvrability without making the handling nervous or distant, as it can do on some cars.

Having said all that, my favourite of the three X5 variants to drive was the EV. Although there is a lot of weight, it’s positioned low down, making the iX5 feel a bit more planted than the others.

Apart from the design and infotainment, which are the same as on the iX5 and still largely secret, things look like business as usual for the X5. There isn’t a whole lot wrong with the current X5, so in a way that’s quite comforting. The diesel and the EV will arrive first in March, with the other versions following later. Assuming prices remain more or less the same, the X5 should continue to do well.

BMW X5 40 xDrive

Big visual changes, smaller mechanical ones.
