Yet Hyundai’s N division, under the stewardship of R&D chief Manfred Harrer, is advancing a more nuanced thesis: that the future of electric performance lies not merely in quantifiable metrics but in the orchestration of subjective, emotionally resonant driving experiences. The evidence suggests that Hyundai’s approach, which foregrounds simulated engine notes, virtual gearshifts, and even artificial idling and vibration, is less about nostalgia and more about engineering a new kind of engagement for drivers who might otherwise feel alienated by the sensory austerity of most EVs.

This interpretive angle complicates the mainstream dichotomy between “authentic” internal combustion and “sterile” electrification. While critics dismiss these features as ersatz or gimmicky, the popularity of Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 N among enthusiasts points to a latent demand for performative cues—however synthetic—that bridge the gap between past and future. The company’s willingness to embrace, rather than conceal, the artifice of these experiences marks a deliberate departure from the purist ethos of brands that valorize mechanical “truth.” Instead, Hyundai is betting that the meaning of authenticity itself is malleable, contingent on the pleasure and agency afforded to the driver.

What Distinguishes Hyundai’s Next-Generation EV Platform?

The forthcoming IMA architecture, slated to succeed the E-GMP platform introduced in 2021, is positioned as a vehicle for incremental, rather than revolutionary, advancement. This distinction is not trivial. The shift from radical innovation to evolutionary refinement suggests that the core technological challenges of EVs—thermal management, efficiency, integration, and cost—are now matters of optimization rather than existential risk. Harrer’s remarks indicate that while the IMA platform will introduce next-generation 800V charging and fifth-generation battery technology, the most salient improvements may be experiential rather than purely technical.

Methodologically, this approach reflects a maturing market: as the novelty of electric propulsion wanes, differentiation will increasingly hinge on the subtleties of user experience. The absence of a precise timeline for IMA’s rollout—though the Ioniq 5’s replacement around 2028 is a plausible inflection point—underscores the strategic patience with which Hyundai is calibrating its transition. The risk, of course, is that incrementalism may be insufficient in the face of disruptive competitors or shifting regulatory regimes. Yet for now, the evidence favors a strategy of steady, user-centered evolution.

Why Does Hyundai’s Focus on “Driving Fun” Matter Beyond the Obvious?

The prioritization of “fun to drive” over technical maximalism carries second-order consequences that extend well beyond the enthusiast niche. By foregrounding engagement, Hyundai is implicitly contesting the notion that electrification must entail a loss of automotive character. This matters structurally: if mainstream consumers come to associate EVs with sensory deprivation, adoption may stall, especially in markets where car culture is deeply entwined with identity and affect.

Moreover, Hyundai’s stance challenges the industry’s prevailing hierarchy, in which brands like Porsche are seen as the custodians of performance legitimacy. By claiming leadership in virtual gearshift technology and experiential design, Hyundai is not merely emulating established players but attempting to redefine the terms of competition. The company’s willingness to “play around” with features that some deride as “fake” signals a broader cultural shift: the boundaries of authenticity are being renegotiated in real time, with consumer preference—not engineering orthodoxy—as the ultimate arbiter.

Who Stands to Gain or Lose from Hyundai’s Evolutionary Strategy?

The immediate beneficiaries are drivers who crave the drama of traditional sports cars but are open to new forms of engagement. Yet the ripple effects are more diffuse. If Hyundai succeeds in normalizing synthetic performance cues, other manufacturers—already observed to be following suit—may accelerate their own investments in experiential engineering. This could, under certain conditions, catalyze a broader reimagining of what constitutes “performance” in the electric era.

Conversely, purists and traditionalists may find themselves increasingly marginalized, their preferences reframed as niche rather than normative. There is also a risk that the pursuit of “fun” becomes a marketing trope, divorced from substantive innovation. The line between meaningful engagement and superficial theatrics is thin, and consumer tolerance for inauthenticity is notoriously fickle.

What Should an Informed Reader Conclude?

The evidence does not warrant unqualified optimism. Hyundai’s evolutionary approach to electric performance—anchored in the cultivation of driving pleasure through both technical and theatrical means—represents a plausible, if contested, path forward. Its success will depend on the company’s ability to balance incremental technical gains with genuine experiential value, and to persuade a skeptical public that authenticity is not the sole preserve of combustion. For stakeholders—whether consumers, competitors, or regulators—the lesson is clear: the future of EVs will be shaped as much by the choreography of sensation as by the calculus of efficiency. To ignore this is to misread both the market and the moment.

R&D boss confirms next EV platform will host sports cars – and they’ll do even better ICE impressions

Hyundai will continue to offer electric performance cars as it moves its EVs onto a new-generation architecture and they will be “even more realistic” than the current Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 N.

Hyundai’s sporting EVs have won acclaim for not just their driving dynamics and performance but also the perceived authenticity of their synthesised engine notes and gearboxes – the latter of which other manufacturers, including Honda and Porsche, have now moved to emulate in their own latest hot EVs.

Manfred Harrer, who heads global R&D for Hyundai, told Autocar he is “super-proud” of the virtual gearshift function and said the brand plans to develop it further for the next iteration.

“We are leading – we are not following – on this technology,” he said. “In the next generation of these cars, I want to make it even more realistic. However, he did not say which model lines would have performance versions.

It will offer “next-generation 800V technology” for faster charging and new fifth-generation battery technology, which is said to bring efficiency and integration improvements.

“It’s not a big step like the first introduction [E-GMP]”, said Harrer, “but now we talk about incremental improvements on the thermal management, on the overall efficency of the car, on the cost, on the integration.

“It’s not a revolution like the first generation.
