The evidence suggests that, for a significant segment of enthusiasts, the appeal of a performance vehicle is not reducible to acceleration times or lateral grip alone. Rather, it is the multisensory experience—the sound, the vibration, the mechanical feedback—that constitutes the core of driver engagement. In this context, the recent proliferation of simulated engine sounds, virtual gearshifts, and even seat shakers in electric vehicles (EVs) represents less a mere marketing gimmick than a deliberate attempt to reconstruct the phenomenology of performance driving.

The Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 EV exemplifies this new paradigm. Drawing on techniques more commonly associated with the music industry than automotive engineering, Mercedes has meticulously sampled and synthesized the auditory and tactile cues of its own turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The methodological rigor—deploying 13 microphones to capture over 1600 unique sound clips—underscores the seriousness with which the brand approaches this project. Yet, the practical significance of these efforts remains contested. While some drivers report a heightened sense of engagement, others perceive a lingering artificiality, a digital patina that cannot fully substitute for the organic unpredictability of combustion.

Is Engine Sound Simulation a Passing Fad or a Lasting Shift?

The proliferation of such technologies across brands—from Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N to Porsche’s Taycan—invites the question: are these simulated experiences a transient novelty, or do they herald a durable transformation in automotive culture? Industry insiders themselves appear ambivalent. On one hand, there is an acknowledgment that these features may be ephemeral, a stopgap measure as both manufacturers and consumers acclimate to the new sensory landscape of electrification. On the other, the argument persists that driving, at its core, is about pleasure and play; if digital augmentation can deliver that, its legitimacy is difficult to dismiss outright.

A more nuanced interpretation would recognize that the longevity of these features will likely depend on their ability to evolve beyond mere mimicry. If future iterations can transcend the uncanny valley—offering not just imitation but genuinely novel forms of engagement—then their adoption may well become structural rather than superficial. The analogy to plant-based meat substitutes is instructive: initial skepticism gives way to acceptance only when the alternative is not merely close to the original, but compelling on its own terms.

Who Benefits—and Who Is Left Out—by This New Approach?

The primary beneficiaries of these innovations are drivers who value the emotional theater of performance motoring but are compelled or inclined to adopt electric vehicles. For them, the simulated pops, bangs, and tactile feedback offer a bridge between tradition and technological progress. Yet, this approach is not without its blind spots. Purists—those for whom authenticity is non-negotiable—may find these interventions unsatisfying, or even antithetical to the ethos of performance driving. Moreover, the focus on recreating combustion-era sensations risks marginalizing the unique affordances of electric propulsion: instantaneous torque, near-silent operation, and the potential for entirely new forms of interaction.

There are also demographic and temporal anomalies worth noting. Younger drivers, less encumbered by nostalgia for combustion, may prove less invested in these simulations. Conversely, in markets where regulatory or cultural pressures accelerate the decline of internal combustion, the appetite for such features may be more pronounced, at least in the short term.

What Are the Structural Limitations and Second-Order Consequences?

The current generation of simulated engagement technologies is constrained by both hardware and software limitations. While seat shakers and sound synthesis can approximate certain aspects of the driving experience, they struggle to replicate the full spectrum of mechanical feedback—particularly through interfaces like the steering wheel or dashboard. The result, as some testers observe, is an experience that is enjoyable but not yet indistinguishable from the original. This gap is not merely technical but conceptual: the attempt to recreate combustion-era thrills may inadvertently constrain the creative possibilities of electric vehicle design.

A further, less obvious consequence is the potential for these technologies to recalibrate consumer expectations. If digital augmentation becomes the norm, future generations of drivers may come to regard the absence of such features as a deficit, rather than a return to purity. This dynamic could entrench a new set of dependencies—on software updates, proprietary sound libraries, and brand-specific sensory signatures—that reshape the competitive landscape of performance motoring.

What Should Informed Consumers and Industry Observers Conclude?

The evidence to date suggests that simulated engagement technologies in EVs are neither a panacea nor a mere gimmick. They represent a transitional strategy, one that acknowledges both the enduring appeal of traditional performance cues and the inevitability of electrification. For consumers, the salient question is not whether these features are “real,” but whether they deliver a form of engagement that is meaningful on its own terms. For industry observers, the more pressing issue is whether this approach will ossify into nostalgia-driven mimicry or evolve into a genuinely new sensory language for electric performance.

In sum, the future of performance motoring will likely be shaped not by the fidelity of simulation, but by the willingness of manufacturers and drivers alike to embrace the creative possibilities—and limitations—of a post-combustion world. The next phase of innovation will belong to those who can move beyond imitation and craft experiences that are both authentic and unprecedented.

Mercedes has moved the engine fakery game on with seat shakers and simulated pops and bangs

The arrival of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N was a landmark moment for electric performance cars. Mercedes brought in staff from the music industry to bolster its authenticity: 13 microphones were mounted both inside and outside an A45 S (powered by the same engine) to record more than 1600 clips covering all manner of driving scenarios.

The EV starts in utter silence, but clicking the drive mode dial into S+ fires it into life in a flash. It’s certainly loud enough to wake the neighbours, so I’m glad there’s a quieter setting.

The seat shakers give you a nice little rumble in the small of your back as you stab at the pedal and watch the revs rise and fall, and it’s enough to recapture a hint of the viscerality that is often missing from sporting EVs.

The revs themselves seem to ebb and flow quicker here than in the petrol A45 S that I drove a couple of winters ago, as if to replicate a car with a lightweight flywheel.

I can see how such a system would really bolster engagement if you were out for a blast – although final judgement on that front will have to wait until we’ve driven the CLA.

There are perhaps a couple of points of improvement.

I’d like a little rumble through the steering wheel, or maybe even the dashboard, to give a greater sense of the underlying power here.

And there’s still a sense of digitisation about its sound signature – although it’s better in person than on camera. It reminds me of my first time trying a McPlant vegan burger: certainly enjoyable and close to the genuine article, but I’m not 100% sure that we’ve beaten the original just yet.

It would also be nice to start the CLA with the ‘engine’ activated. Starting in complete silence loses a bit of the theatre of stepping into a blue-blooded performance car, prodding the starter and relishing in the boom of combustion power that is so instructive of its intent.

Hear it for yourself by watching the video above.

[2,291

post-75377","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-featured","category-opinion
["GET
