It&#8217;s an emotional thing, it&#8217;s not just an engineering thing, and it&#8217;s still there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But offering a stick shift in a mainstream car is becoming harder, van Meel added: \u201cThe supplier base is getting smaller, and with all the driver assist systems it&#8217;s getting more difficult to disconnect the drivetrain. Then you&#8217;re disconnected from your driving assistance system as well as all the mild hybridisation systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet this \u201cdoesn\u2019t mean it isn\u2019t possible\u201d, he said, adding:\u00a0\u201cWe intend to keep the manual as long as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>M3 keeps its signature straight six<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"BMW M3 Touring engine\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bmw-m3-evolves-with-manual-option-and-distinct-ice-ev-choices-amid-regulatory-pressures-1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In either case, key to the appeal of the next combustion-engined M3 will be the retention of its turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol straight six.<\/p>\n<p>This diverges from the path followed by BMW&#8217;s German rivals: the <a href=\"\/car-review\/audi\/rs5\">Audi RS5<\/a> kept the <a href=\"\/car-news\/new-cars\/special-audi-rs4-marks-25-years-famed-moniker-\u00a3115880\">RS4<\/a>&#8216;s 2.9-litre V6 but added plug-in-hybrid hardware, while the <a href=\"\/car-review\/mercedes-amg\/c63-s-e-performance\">Mercedes-AMG C63<\/a> moved from a V8 to a four-cylinder PHEV system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>BMW&#8217;s\u00a0\u2018S58\u2019 engine, also used in the M2 and <a href=\"\/car-review\/bmw\/m4-competition\">M4<\/a> coup\u00e9s,\u00a0was recently updated to <a href=\"\/car-news\/technology\/bmw-m-straight-six-and-v8-survive-euro-7-emissions-rules\">meet the Euro 7 emissions standard<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0a significant engineering effort.<\/p>\n<p>It was redeveloped for pre-chamber combustion, in which a small amount of fuel is detonated in a small space just before the fuel reaches the main cylinder. This creates a highly energised &#8216;jet&#8217;\u00a0that then lights the fuel in the main chamber.<\/p>\n<p>This, BMW claims, is much quicker than a traditional spark plug, which brings several benefits.\u00a0Chief among them is increased greater energy efficiency, and therefore greater fuel efficiency, which reduces emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Van Meel told Autocar last year: \u201cThe whole story is about driving with lambda one [when the air-fuel ratio for combustion is perfectly matched], so you have to keep that. And there&#8217;s no cooling;\u00a0normally, if you are in high-performance situations, you cool using the fuel. With Euro 7\u00a0that\u2019s impossible, so you need to find different ways of avoiding temperature build-up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new combustion process also helps to alleviate premature fuel detonations (knock),\u00a0which allows it to be run at a higher compression ratio, thereby boosting power.<\/p>\n<p>The updated engine also gets new variable-geometry turbochargers.<\/p>\n<p>These measures meant BMW could mitigate any loss of power from adjustments made to meet the requirements of Euro 7 \u2013 and\u00a0the firm claims\u00a0they also create a throatier induction and exhaust sound at high revs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Next petrol BMW M3 petrol at the Nurburgring \u2013 front, cornering\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bmw-m3-evolves-with-manual-option-and-distinct-ice-ev-choices-amid-regulatory-pressures-2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>BMW has previously confirmed that \u201cpower outputs will be unchanged from those of the corresponding outgoing engines\u201d. For reference, the current M3 puts out 523bhp and 479lb ft of torque.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Autocar last week, van Meel said: \u201cWe&#8217;re leading with the M3 today and we&#8217;re not going to give that up. That&#8217;s why we first said [at the start of the development programme] that we\u2019re going to bring the current engine to the EU7 level;\u00a0then that\u2019s already done.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we look into the next-generation M3, we already have the drivetrain. The engines are already there, and we are of course already working on the combustion-engined M3 as well;\u00a0that&#8217;s in the books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van Meel added that he is \u201cconfident we can keep up the power\u201d\u00a0but highlighted cooling as an issue brought by the new engines: \u201cIf you go on track, of course, temperature is an issue. We improved cooling to counteract; the challenge with the big engines and the big coolers that they need to be even stronger.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This manifests in the large open grille at the front end of the next combustion-engined M3, behind which a large intercooler is stashed.<\/p>\n<p>Asked by Autocar whether there is still potential to improve ICE performance cars, in light of tightening regulation and investment being diverted to electrification programmes,\u00a0van Meel answered: \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Choice of ICE or EV is key<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Next petrol BMW M3 petrol at the Nurburgring \u2013 rear, showing quad-tip exhaust\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bmw-m3-evolves-with-manual-option-and-distinct-ice-ev-choices-amid-regulatory-pressures-3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although the petrol and electric derivatives of the next M3 will be based on different architectures, effectively making them two completely distinct cars,\u00a0the ICE car will have the same styling as the EV.<\/p>\n<p>The design of both cars was previewed with the recent <a href=\"\/car-news\/electric-cars\/bmw-m3s-future-revealed-dramatic-new-concept\">M Concept Neue Klasse<\/a>. Key differences include the large\u00a0front grille but also a smaller rear diffuser.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The electric M3 will take advantage of the lack of an exhaust by maximising the size of its underbody aerodynamics, but this will not be possible for the ICE car, which retains a quad-tip exhaust.<\/p>\n<p>Van Meel pointed to the updated engine as an example of how M will negotiate the years to come\u00a0and said it&#8217;s important to offer customers a choice between combustion engines and EVs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He elaborated: \u201cThere might be customers who say \u2018I want to have a combustion engine because I like the sound or the exterior\u00a0or I cannot charge\u2019.\u00a0That\u2019s fully okay. If you are into racing or driving dynamics, you might [prefer] the electric one. I always say in case of doubt, buy both: the combustion-engined one and the electric one, and then you can make a new choice every day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the customers [for both versions] will actually be the same, and they can choose like they can today:\u00a0they can choose if they buy an M2, M3, M4 or an M Performance model. Now they can choose: \u2018Do I want to drive electric or combustion?\u2019\u00a0We promise the way the car drives and the way it makes you feel is always there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe bring this decision-making process to the customer, not to us. We just want our offering\u00a0and the customer can decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To that end, BMW M sales boss Sylvia Neubauer recently told Autocar the ICE M3 will be priced <a href=\"\/car-news\/electric-cars\/1000bhp-bmw-m3-ev-be-priced-same-ballpark-petrol-twin\">in the \u201csame ballpark\u201d<\/a> as the EV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously we will not convince 100% out of the petrolhead target group to buy an all electric BMW M3,\u201d she said. \u201cBut out of 100 people that try it, we will be able to convince some.
