This\u00a0represents a total transformation of the forthcoming i3 electric saloon, with its muscular design drawing on the M division\u2019s sporting heritage.<\/p>\n<p>But it will also be sold alongside a <a href=\"\/car-news\/new-cars\/next-petrol-bmw-m3-breaks-cover-\u2013-and-it-could-offer-manual-box\">new combustion-engined generation<\/a>\u00a0of the stalwart super-saloon, which was recently caught testing for the first time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Its turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six has been updated to meet the Euro 7 emissions requirement without any loss of power from the current 503bhp.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Autocar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, van Meel said: \u201cNow we are fighting against [ourselves], because with the all-electric M3\u00a0we are attacking our best-selling product \u2013 the leader in its segment.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>We are also working on a future generation of [petrol] M3, but now we have an internal fight. We are just pushing ourselves with the two different powertrains, and it&#8217;s a great contest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Key to the electric M3\u2019s engineering brief is that it will have <a href=\"\/car-news\/new-cars\/quad-motor-bmw-m3-ev-get-simulated-gearbox-engine-note\">four motors<\/a> \u2013\u00a0but it won&#8217;t\u00a0simply chase headline power and torque outputs, instead using the unusual arrangement to bolster its poise and agility in pursuit of heightened driver engagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not about having even more power,\u201d emphasised van Meel. \u201cAt the end of the day, you can\u2019t put that down to the road anyway. You can have strong arms and strong legs, but you don\u2019t use them all at the same time.\u00a0And it\u2019s the same with four electric motors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The M division is instead looking to unlock the dynamic benefit brought by having four\u00a0motors controlled by a central computer, referred to as the Heart of Joy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s insane what you can do with that technology,\u201d said van Meel. \u201cYou can bring more agility or stability to the car.\u00a0You can brake the inner wheels, accelerate the outer ones and can get out of turns in a completely different way. Of course you need a lot of power [in a performance car], but you also have to control power. If you just throw out a huge amount, you will just leave four stripes on the Tarmac. In the best case\u00a0it\u2019s still stable\u00a0but actually makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van Meel is confident that the new capabilities brought by the quad-motor powertrain will win over buyers in the battle between the ICE and electric M3s.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThere might be customers who say they want to have a combustion engine because they like the sound or the looks\u00a0or cannot charge at home. That\u2019s fully okay. But every sound only made sense for that specific car. If you try to put the sound in another car, the feeling is not right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The M division will instead develop a new sound inspired by the electric motors \u2013 but this, said van Meel, \u201cshouldn\u2019t be any Captain Kirk spaceship sound, because then you\u2019re not connected\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said the dilemma is \u201cphilosophical\u201d and that the M division is trying to \u201cmove ahead\u201d in replicating the \u201cfeeling\u201d and \u201cemotion\u201d of an ICE car, rather than directly copying its character.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"BMW M Concept Neue Klasse concept sketch \u2013 driving\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bmw-m3-electrifies-performance-benchmark-by-prioritizing-driver-engagement-over-power-in-ev-petrol-showdown-4.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>More broadly, van Meel said the decision to simulate the power delivery of a combustion engine and gearbox is intended to make driving an electric M3 more intuitive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re on the track, you want to know how quick you are. You need to have some pedal feel and ratios that you are comfortable with, so that you automatically know you are driving [for example] 100mph because you are in third gear,\u00a0because you know the deceleration and acceleration. That\u2019s what you want.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>You can of course copy a gearbox, and it\u2019s already quite emotional.\u00a0That\u2019s a good idea. But we want more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Design reinvention<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"BMW designer Michael Scully with the M Concept Neue Klasse\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bmw-m3-electrifies-performance-benchmark-by-prioritizing-driver-engagement-over-power-in-ev-petrol-showdown-5.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fundamental to the design of the next M3 is \u201cproportion\u201d, said M division designer Michael Scully, guiding Autocar around the M concept.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we look at the new powertrain there are a very different set of considerations packaging-wise, and we have worked very hard to get the proportions to what our customers expect \u2013\u00a0that very classic two and a half boxes with a very agile, dynamic [stance].<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>To find a proportion that works for us is the first order of business, and we have a chance to take it one step further in terms of boldness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scully also hinted at a cleaner, less fussy look for future M cars. \u201cWe are reducing them down to really the performance essence of the car. There\u2019s a reductionism which, if done intelligently, means you can get it down to what is truly necessary from a performance standpoint.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>That\u2019s really important in racing, and we\u2019re now approaching it the same way in our production models.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"BMW M Concept Neue Klasse front detail\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bmw-m3-electrifies-performance-benchmark-by-prioritizing-driver-engagement-over-power-in-ev-petrol-showdown-6.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Scully described the fresh approach as \u201cintelligent reduction\u201d, as\u00a0\u201cwhenever it turns into a decorative area, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s a good thing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if that meant a move away from the large grilles and aggressive flares on current M cars, he explained: \u201cIntelligent reduction is important, but it\u2019s also about emphasising functional elements.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>What\u2019s really important is that the elements we do have \u2013 from an aerodynamic perspective \u2013 is the real stuff, it\u2019s not implied. That\u2019s where the authenticity comes from. Our customers have incredibly educated eyes and they can see if we [jump the shark] on performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also important to embrace the new powertrain. For example, we\u2019ve got four electric motors,\u00a0one on each corner, so let\u2019s pronounce that. It helps make the cars look muscular and strong\u00a0but it also pronounces where the powertrain is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scully drew\u00a0on his experience shaping BMW\u2019s race cars in devising the new M3.<\/p>\n<p>One example of his new, more purposeful approach is the massive double-decker diffuser mounted at the rear of the M Concept Neue Klasse.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"BMW M4 GT3 Evo at N24\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bmw-m3-electrifies-performance-benchmark-by-prioritizing-driver-engagement-over-power-in-ev-petrol-showdown-7.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This, Scully explained, was inspired by the racing M3s fielded in the GT2 and GT3 classes over the years. Those cars trade a traditional exhaust for side-exit systems, opening up space for a more aggressive rear diffuser, needed to generate downforce on track.<\/p>\n<p>Replicating this design on the road-going M cars of the past wouldn&#8217;t have been possible, lest drivers or passengers burn their legs on entry or exit after a spirited drive. But\u00a0when you dispense of an engine in its entirety,\u00a0and therefore also an\u00a0exhaust,\u00a0that frees up room for such an aerodynamic package.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have that [exhaust] requirement, so let\u2019s open it up and celebrate the opportunity that we have now,\u201d said Scully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a double-decker layout for the diffuser with a main [section] and an aerofoil across the bottom. The floating aerofoil helps to manage the flow. With aerodynamics, there\u2019s never one standalone element: it\u2019s always a constellation of things that affect each other.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>For example, that diffuser interacts significantly with the duck-tail spoiler, so that\u2019s a constellation;\u00a0that\u2019s where a lot of downforce comes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"BMW M Concept Neue Klasse sketches\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bmw-m3-electrifies-performance-benchmark-by-prioritizing-driver-engagement-over-power-in-ev-petrol-showdown-8.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love downforce, because that\u2019s the thing that, from a driving sensation standpoint, allows you to do things which your intuition says you can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When a car does that,\u00a0when it enables the driver to experience those things their intuition tells them is impossible,\u00a0I think we\u2019ve landed in a great space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, prototypes of the next combustion-engined M3 have revealed\u00a0a smaller rear diffuser than their electric counterparts, owing to the presence of M&#8217;s signature quad-tip exhaust.<\/p>\n<p>Scully also highlighted the large, deep vent in the concept\u2019s raked bonnet. This is used to cool the four motors\u2019 front-mounted radiator,\u00a0but such a prominent feature would not have been possible were it not electric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormally you would have a big engine right there and there\u2019s no way you could have those ducts, but here we can,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"BMW M Concept Neue Klasse \u2013 front\" class=\"image-body-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvillagespace.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/bmw-m3-electrifies-performance-benchmark-by-prioritizing-driver-engagement-over-power-in-ev-petrol-showdown-9.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Notably, the M concept dispenses with the hook-like side mirrors that have been a fixture of the M3 since the E36 generation.<\/p>\n<p>This, said Scully, is another manifestation of motorsport-inspired design: \u201cM customers over the years have come to know and love the cars for having this hook that points back toward the centreline of the car. But what we discovered was that if we turn the fin vertically, it&#8217;s actually more efficient and brings small gains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the car\u2019s main-beam lights are mounted low and wide on the M Concept\u2019s flanks.
