Evidence from recent test drives suggests that Vauxhall has prioritized roll resistance and steering precision to an unusual degree for a vehicle of this size and mass—at 2215kg, the Grandland is no lightweight. The result is a driving experience that, while superficially reminiscent of sportier models, imposes a tangible cost on ride comfort. This trade-off is not unique to Vauxhall; rather, it exemplifies a wider industry trend in which manufacturers attempt to imbue family-oriented vehicles with athletic characteristics, often at the expense of the attributes that originally defined the segment.

The methodological limitation here is clear: subjective assessments of ride quality, even when corroborated by experienced professionals such as automotive photographers, remain vulnerable to individual sensitivity and context. Yet, the consistency of complaints regarding the Grandland’s choppy ride—on both typical British roads and even on the ostensibly smooth surface of a karting circuit—suggests a systemic issue rather than isolated perception. The use of large 20-inch wheels, now standard on all-wheel-drive variants, compounds the problem by reducing sidewall compliance, further eroding comfort.

Why Do Manufacturers Persist in Prioritizing Sportiness Over Comfort, and Who Pays the Price?

The rationale for this engineering direction is not entirely opaque. Marketing imperatives and consumer surveys routinely highlight a desire for vehicles that feel “engaging” or “dynamic,” even among buyers who rarely, if ever, exploit such capabilities. However, the evidence indicates that the majority of family SUV owners prioritize daily comfort, ease of use, and versatility over lap times or cornering prowess. The Grandland’s stiff suspension, while delivering commendable body control, undermines its utility for precisely those users—families, commuters, and professionals—who depend on it as an all-purpose conveyance.

This misalignment between design intent and user need is not merely academic. The second-order effects are significant: increased driver fatigue, reduced passenger satisfaction, and, as observed, even the triggering of electronic stability systems on rough surfaces. The latter is particularly telling; when a vehicle’s own sensors interpret its ride as unstable, the calibration has arguably overshot the mark. The broader implication is that the pursuit of “sportiness” in this context is less a response to genuine demand than a reflection of competitive signaling within the industry—a kind of arms race that leaves the core constituency underserved.

Are There Features That Mitigate the Grandland’s Shortcomings, and What Lessons Should Informed Consumers Draw?

Not all aspects of the Grandland’s user experience are compromised by this dynamic emphasis. The ability to disable advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) with a single, physical button stands out as a rare instance of user-centric design, particularly in an era when such functions are increasingly buried within labyrinthine digital menus. This feature, while seemingly minor, addresses a growing frustration among drivers who wish to modulate the level of automated intervention according to context and preference. It is a reminder that thoughtful interface design can meaningfully enhance perceived quality, even when core mechanical attributes fall short.

For the informed reader, the lesson is twofold. First, skepticism is warranted when manufacturers tout “sporty” dynamics in vehicles whose primary mission is comfort and practicality; such claims often mask compromises that may not align with real-world usage patterns. Second, attention should be paid to the cumulative impact of design decisions—wheel size, suspension tuning, electronic interventions—on the holistic driving experience. The Grandland’s case suggests that incremental gains in agility may not justify the attendant losses in comfort, especially when the vehicle’s fundamental architecture imposes immutable limits on its dynamic potential.

What Structural Blind Spots and Industry Incentives Perpetuate This Cycle?

The persistence of this pattern reflects deeper structural blind spots. Automotive product planners, incentivized to differentiate their offerings in a crowded market, may over-index on attributes that are easily demonstrated in controlled tests or marketing materials but less relevant to everyday users. Meanwhile, the feedback loop between press coverage, consumer surveys, and engineering priorities can amplify outlier preferences, distorting the development process. In the case of the Grandland, the evidence suggests that a modest recalibration—dialing back suspension stiffness by even 10%—could yield a more balanced product without materially compromising its composure or safety.

Ultimately, the Grandland’s experience serves as a cautionary tale for both manufacturers and consumers. For the former, it underscores the necessity of aligning product attributes with the lived realities of target users, rather than the aspirations projected onto them. For the latter, it is a prompt to interrogate the substance behind marketing claims and to demand vehicles that serve their actual, rather than imagined, needs.

Track excursion reveals an identity crisis: this SUV thinks it’s a sports car

During the first few weeks with my Vauxhall Grandland, I pondered aloud whether its maker had sacrificed an element of comfort and practicality in search of a more ‘sporting’ drive, and I think I should perhaps explain a little further. For a large family SUV, the Vauxhall rolls very little and corners with surprising poise. Its steering is pleasingly accurate – albeit rather over-light and lacking any semblance of feel – and sharp, although fortunately not quite in the over-sensitive mould of its Stellantis stablemate Peugeot.

The trouble is, this is a fairly tall vehicle that tips the scales at a hefty 2215kg (including the driver), and in order to tie it down to the degree Vauxhall has done, you need to specify some pretty stiff springs and dampers. As a result, the penalty for the Grandland’s surprising agility is a ride that is choppy to the point of being uncomfortable, particularly on poor road surfaces – and let’s be frank, we are hardly renowned for our billiard-smooth Tarmac here in the UK. And it’s not aided by the 20in alloys fitted as standard to all-wheel-drive models.

But don’t just take my word for it. Photographer Max Edleston has developed an acute sensitivity to ride quality, mainly because when he is hanging out the back of a car (on a harness – safety first) peering through the lens of his camera, he needs there to be as little disturbance as possible if he is to get a pin-sharp shot. On a recent photoshoot for affordable sports cars at Shenington Kart Racing Club, Oxfordshire, Max reckoned the Grandland would be just the thing for some tracking photography. And indeed it was, at least in part: the electrically operated bootlid doesn’t sag once under way, as happens with some wagons, and there is plenty of space for him to stretch out as he focuses on the pursuing car. However, immediately after setting off, around a track designed for go-karts with rubber-band tyres wrapping 5in rims, he expressed his shock at how restless the ride felt, even on such a super-smooth surface.

Admittedly, once the photography was over it was a hoot to punt the Grandland around the track for a couple of laps, but much as I enjoy a sharp drive, at the end of the day this is a family SUV, not a sports car, so its dynamic abilities are always going to be limited by more factors than merely body roll. I can’t help feeling that dialling back the stiffness by 10% or more wouldn’t have had a terrible effect on the Vauxhall’s inherent balance, but it would have made it a much more comfortable daily companion.

Even the car itself gets a bit stressed by its own rigidity at times. Go over a speed bump or a particularly rough surface at any more than walking pace and the light for the stability control will start to flash – not because the wheels are losing traction (you don’t even need to have your foot on the throttle), but simply because it detects its own instability.

One element of the Grandland’s driver aids has left me very happy, though. While chatting with road tester Illya Verpraet about the car recently, he pointed out one of his favourite features of the model being the ability to disable much of the ADAS functionality with a single, physical button rather than having to scroll through various menus as increasingly seems to be the default setting on most cars. You simply press the little image of a car beneath the central infotainment screen and the automated nannying is reduced for that drive.

I haven’t found the Grandland’s systems to be too intrusive so far, particularly compared with the new-to-market Chinese opposition, but I have to applaud Vauxhall’s decision to make it easier for the driver to choose how much support they want.

[2,137

post-77119","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-featured","category-news
["GET
