Instead, the brand’s leadership has articulated a deliberate pivot toward the rarefied territory occupied by the likes of Bentley and, more aspirationally, Rolls-Royce. This is not merely a matter of escalating sticker prices; it is a structural reorientation of the brand’s value proposition, one that privileges hyper-personalization and experiential exclusivity over conventional metrics of performance or utility.

The recent sale of the SV Asilomar Edition for nearly £500,000—twice the price of the already rarefied Range Rover SV—serves as a case in point. Yet, the methodological boundaries of this data point warrant scrutiny. One-off commissions are, by definition, statistical outliers. Their existence, however, signals a willingness among a subset of ultra-high-net-worth individuals to treat the automobile as a canvas for personal expression rather than a mere conveyance. Range Rover’s explicit intention to expand its bespoke program, including the opening of additional ‘Range Rover Houses’ for immersive commissioning experiences, suggests that these outliers are being reimagined as the vanguard of a new business model rather than isolated anomalies.

What Is the Underlying Mechanism Driving Escalating Prices and Personalization?

The core mechanism at play is not simply inflationary pricing, but the monetization of identity and narrative. When Martin Limpert, Range Rover’s managing director, asserts that “the sky is the limit” and that ultimate value depends on “the levels of personalisation capabilities,” he is articulating a logic that transcends the physical car. The vehicle becomes a vessel for heritage, status, and even philanthropy—as evidenced by the Asilomar Edition’s bundled ocean conservation donation and bespoke golf clubs.

This approach, while lucrative, is not without its blind spots. The practical significance of personalization is bounded by the finite number of buyers for whom such expenditures are rational or desirable. Moreover, the conflation of luxury with personal narrative risks alienating traditionalists who value the brand’s legacy of understated capability. The evidence from rival brands—wherein six-figure commissions coexist with entry-level models—suggests that market segmentation can be managed, but only if the brand’s core identity remains legible across the spectrum.

Who Benefits—and Who Is Marginalized—by This Strategic Shift?

While the most obvious beneficiaries are the ultra-wealthy clients who can afford to commission one-off vehicles, the second-order effects ripple outward. Dealers and craftspeople specializing in bespoke work stand to gain, as do suppliers of rare materials and artisanal services. Yet, under specific conditions, this upmarket migration may exacerbate exclusivity to the point of eroding broader brand loyalty. The anticipated retirement of the Evoque and Velar models, for instance, would effectively raise the entry price for Range Rover ownership to around £70,000—a threshold that redefines the brand’s accessibility.

This dynamic is not unique to Range Rover; it mirrors a broader trend in luxury goods, where brands cultivate scarcity and narrative as a hedge against commoditization. However, the risk profile is asymmetric. Should economic conditions shift or consumer tastes pivot away from conspicuous consumption, the brand’s reliance on high-margin, low-volume commissions could expose it to volatility not faced by more diversified competitors.

Are There Structural Limitations or Vested Interests Shaping This Evolution?

The move to distinguish Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery as discrete ‘House of Brands’ entities is, on its face, a rational response to the need for clearer market segmentation. Yet, this reframing is not purely consumer-driven. It reflects internal pressures to maximize the equity of each sub-brand while reducing cannibalization. Land Rover’s relegation to a ‘trust mark’ rather than a primary identity signals a calculated bet that Range Rover’s name carries greater cachet among the target demographic.

However, this strategy is not without its critics. Some industry observers argue that the relentless pursuit of luxury risks diluting the rugged, go-anywhere ethos that originally defined the marque. The evidence for or against this thesis remains contested, as the brand’s sales data and customer satisfaction metrics have yet to fully reflect the long-term consequences of this repositioning.

What Should an Informed Reader Infer About the Future of Luxury Automotive Branding?

The Range Rover case illustrates a broader inflection point in the luxury automotive sector: the transition from product-centric to experience- and identity-centric value creation. For stakeholders—be they potential buyers, investors, or industry analysts—the salient question is not whether the sky is the limit for pricing, but whether the underlying social and economic structures can sustain this model over time.

In the short term, the appetite for hyper-personalized, high-status vehicles appears robust, particularly in markets where wealth concentration is accelerating. Yet, the durability of this demand is contingent on factors that extend beyond the automotive sector: shifting attitudes toward conspicuous consumption, regulatory pressures on emissions and materials sourcing, and the unpredictable dynamics of global wealth distribution.

For those considering engagement with the brand—whether as a customer or a strategic partner—the prudent course is to interrogate not just the surface-level allure of bespoke luxury, but the deeper currents shaping its evolution. The evidence suggests that while Range Rover’s ascent into the upper echelons of automotive luxury is both deliberate and, for now, successful, its long-term sustainability will depend on its ability to balance exclusivity with authenticity, and innovation with heritage.

Asilomar Edition is the most expensive factory-made Range Rover yet

Brand will focus on the “big business” of high-value commissions, mirroring luxury rivals

JLR has said “the sky is the limit” for Range Rover pricing, as it looks to increase its bespoke offerings and move firmly into luxury car territory.

Range Rover managing director Martin Limpert said: “We don’t want to show up as a car company, we want to show up as a modern luxury company”.

Last year the brand sold its first factory-supplied car for almost £500,000: the SV Asilomar edition, which was presented during Monterey Car Week.

Limpert told Autocar that it could and will go further: “I think the sky is the limit. We want to further evolve that business area.

“Bespoke is a really big business area for us. We curated for a US customer the SV Asilomar edition, which was sold for $550,000 [£410,230], roughly double the price of the Range Rover SV. But after elevating and curating it with the personal requirements, that’s where we ended up.”

Developing its bespoke offerings would put Range Rover firmly into the sphere of Bentley and towards Rolls-Royce.

Steve Cropley’s view: Can Range Rover really rival Rolls-Royce? History says yes

Within the next year it plans on opening another 12 commissioning suites for its bespoke programme, so-called ‘Range Rover Houses’, which it said “offer clients a sanctuary to immerse themselves in luxury experiences and to be among the first in the world to see and drive some of Range Rover’s most exclusive models”.

Asked just how expensive a Range Rover could be, Limpert replied: “I don’t see a limit. Honestly, I think it depends on the value that we generate for the customer. It really depends on the levels of personalisation capabilities, where we’re really trying to push the boundaries – from paint jobs, to stitching, to embroidery, to getting a family crest or your family name on different places of the veneers and so on.

“In the future, can we use materials that are not currently part of our offering but that the customer wants to be included because they have a historical relationship to it, or something like this.

“It really depends ultimately on what value do we generate for our customers?”

As if to illustrate the point, Range Rover tuner Overfinch recently announced its 25-off Holland & Holland edition (below), one of which cost its owner £1 million, as testament to the amount buyers are willing to pay to make their Range Rover as bespoke as possible.

Despite the push upmarket, Limpert said the incoming GT will be a complementary fifth model in the Range Rover line-up rather than a replacement for either of its least expensive models, the Evoque and Velar.

“It’s not replacing anything,” he said, although those two models are eight and nine years old respectively and thought to be up for retirement soon. That would leave the entry point for a Range Rover with the GT, with a predicted starting price around £70,000.

Rival premium car manufacturers have shown it’s possible to keep both very expensive and value models in the range: buyers can spend around £30,000 or well into six figures on cars from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

But JLR aims to create bigger spaces between its three SUV marques: Defender, Discovery and Range Rover.

“That’s the whole idea of setting up the House of Brands,” said Limpert of JLR’s move to reframe its three SUV brands, with Land Rover used only as a ‘trust mark’ on the SUVs and 4x4s.

“Speaking for my brand in that case,” Limpert added, “the equity is already there: customers recognise it more as a Range Rover [than a Land Rover] already.

Defining the difference between the three brands, Limpert said: “Defender is all about rugged off-road capabilities – really about pure adventure. This is for those people that really want to go anywhere and do anything.”

Discovery, meanwhile, “is all about versatility, family, togetherness. It’s more about where the journey is the destination.”

New models and the rebranding, Limpert said, were meant “really to give each their space and their room to define and grow their personalities.” He added: “Not that we want to tell customers which brand to buy.”

Inside the £410k Asilomar Edition

Unique look

Two-tone paint is inspired by the underwater landscapes of Monterey Bay, where the car was revealed.
