The battle for Lahore seat, NA-120 will be fought between two women in Dr. Yasmeen Rashid and Kulsoom Nawaz. After dithering and deliberating for two weeks, the PML-N on Thursday decided to field former First Lady Mrs. Kulsoom Nawaz for the by-polls which are slated to be held in September. The seat is up for grabs ever since the disqualification of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Earlier, CM Punjab Shehbaz Sharif was to be given the ticket but according to reports, he was hesitant to leave his position as the Chief Executive of the province. The former First Lady will file her nomination papers today.

Panic is conspicuous in the ranks of the ruling party while PTI looks calm and composed as far as these elections are concerned

Many have raised eyebrows on the fact that the Sharifs are treating PML-N as a private limited company. As it stands, the Sharifs haven’t been able to find anyone outside the family.

Despite not being in mainstream politics, Mrs. Nawaz commands respect within the party and is credited for leading the campaign to release his incarcerated husband after the military coup of 1999.

It remains to be seen whether the campaign can be launched with full gusto amid the GT Road rally.

A confident-looking Yasmeen

Dr. Yasmeen filed her nomination papers today. She lost to former premier Nawaz Sharif in the 2013 elections by about 40,000. Her campaign is up and running in the constituency with she herself taking to the streets. While talking to the media, Dr. Yasmeen expressed apprehensions over N-League attempting to carry out pre-poll rigging in the constituency. She confidently said that all efforts will go in vain.

Dr. Yasmeen said that while she is out on the streets asking for votes, her counterparts are using government machinery to their advantage. She also said that while she is a hard working Middle-Class lady, Kulsoom is from the ruling party.

The former professor said that the GT Road rally was a flop show and all endeavors to wrest back lost ground will grind to a halt.

PTI and PML-N will once again lock horns in an important constituency. The polls are important for both the parties. PTI wants to dispell the impression that it cannot defeat PML-N on the ballot boxes.

For PML-N it is a question of saving their existing vote bank. Panic is conspicuous in the ranks of the ruling party while PTI looks calm and composed as far as these elections are concerned. It is an important litmus test for PTI and in all earnestness, Dr. Yasmeen will ready to give a tough fight.
