Prime Minister of Malta Robert Abela has announced that the country will officially recognise Palestine next month.
The announcement was made during a political event where Abela addressed both national and global issues, with a special focus on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as reported by Malta Today.
“We cannot turn a blind eye to this unfolding human tragedy that worsens by the day,” Abela said, referring to Israel’s intense bombardment of Gaza. The fierce bombardments have killed 54,000 Palestinians so far, as per the number quoted by the Palestinian Health Ministry.
Abela emphasised that it is the moral responsibility to recognize the state of Palestine. The formal decision will be announced at the meeting on June 20th.
He also condemned the incident of Israel killing nine children of paediatrician Dr. Alaa Al-Najjar, who were killed in the Israeli attack on her home in Khan Younis, Gaza. Her husband, a doctor, and only one of their child survived.
Maltese Prime Minister Abela asserted that Malta is ready to offer refuge to Dr. Alaa Al-Najjar and her surviving family members.

Israel has placed a strict blockade on the aid and relief supplies in Gaza. The international community is strongly condemning the blockade of aid in Gaza.
World leaders meeting in Madrid at the weekend called for an end to the “inhumane” and “senseless” war, while humanitarian organisations said the trickle of resumed aid is not nearly enough to staunch the hunger and health crises.
At least 13 more Palestinians were killed in the latest wave of Israel’s onslaught on Gaza. In Gaza City, rescuers said Monday they “retrieved 13 martyrs and 21 injured from inside Fahmi Al-Jarjawi School in the Al-Daraj neighbourhood, after the Israeli occupation forces targeted it at dawn”.
Saudi Arabia and France will be hosting an international conference with the backing of the UN to implement the two-state solution.
