Afghanistan Orders Traders to Halt Business with Pakistan Amid Ongoing Border Closure

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar directs Afghan traders to end all business with Pakistan, citing repeated border shutdowns, poor-quality imports, and political pressure.

The Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Afghanistan, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, has called the Afghan traders to immediately stop trade with Pakistan and has ordered them to look for alternative trade routes to Pakistan.

He added that after this notice, if any trader is found trading with Pakistan and faces problems, the government will not provide any assistance. Mullah Baradar further stated that if Pakistan wants to reopen the trade routes with Afghanistan, it should give concrete guarantees that it will not close them again and again under any circumstances.

“All Afghan traders and industrialists should turn to alternative trade routes instead of Pakistan. These routes have not only harmed our traders but have also caused difficulties for markets and the general public. I strongly urge all traders to implement alternative options for imports and exports as soon as possible,” he said.

He also criticized the mediocre quality of medicines that are being imported from Pakistan and has given the medicine importers from Afghanistan 3 months to close their accounts and end business dealings with their traders in Pakistan. He assured that Afghanistan now has access to alternative trade routes for imports and exports and that its economic ties with regional countries have expanded significantly compared to the past.

“Our health sector’s main problem is the import of low-quality medicines from Pakistan. I strongly urge all medicine importers to immediately find alternative supply routes. Those who have contracts or purchases in Pakistan are given three months to settle their accounts and wind up their work,” Baradar said.

He added that Afghanistan is often targeted with political pressure and that trade relations and the suffering of refugees are being used as tools for irrational political motives. He stressed that, however, he does acknowledge the fact that the neighboring countries are interdependent on each other when it comes to trade.

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is continuously working to establish new alternative routes for regional and global connectivity and to make existing routes more standard and efficient from technical and infrastructural perspectives,” he added.

The trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan was already suspended when Pakistan shut down all the border crossings between the two countries following rising tensions and border clashes between the two countries.

The statement of Mullah Baradar came at a time when Turkey and Qatar are trying to mediate and improve relations between the two countries, and to extend the ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The borders between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been shut down for 32 days for all types of trade, and a large number of vehicles loaded with commercial goods are currently parked at the border.
