Arshad Nadeem named Asia’s Best Athlete after historic Olympic triumph

Olympic hero Arshad Nadeem honoured in South Korea as Asia’s best, after ending Pakistan’s 32-year medal drought at the Games.

Pakistan’s javelin sensation and Olympic gold medalist, Arshad Nadeem, has been crowned Best Asian Athlete by the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) in a prestigious ceremony held in Gumi, South Korea. The award recognises his extraordinary achievements in athletics and marks a proud moment for Pakistan on the international sports stage.

The honour was presented during the Asian Athletics Federation’s annual meeting, attended by top officials from across the continent. Dignitaries present at the ceremony included Major General (R) Muhammad Akram Sahi, Chairman of South Asian Athletics, Brigadier (R) Wajahat Hussain Sahi, President of the Athletics Federation of Pakistan, Secretary Colonel (R) Shah Jehan, and Salman Iqbal Butt.

Olympic Glory with Record-Breaking Throw

The award follows Arshad’s incredible performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he not only secured Pakistan’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medal but also shattered records in the process.

Despite a foul throw on his first attempt, Arshad rebounded with a colossal 92.97-meter throw in his second attempt – the longest in Olympic history. His remaining throws included distances of 88.72m, 79.40m, 84.87m, and a stunning 91.79m—the second-longest in Olympic history, further confirming his dominance. His performance beat out top competitors, including India’s Neeraj Chopra, who claimed silver with an 89.45m throw.

This landmark achievement ended Pakistan’s 32-year Olympic medal drought, with the last medal having come during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Arshad’s win marked the nation’s return to the Olympic podium in spectacular fashion.

Career of Rising Success

Arshad’s recognition as Asia’s Best Athlete is the latest in a string of accolades that reflect his growing influence in global athletics. In 2024, he was also honoured with Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s second-highest civilian award, for his groundbreaking Olympic performance.

The 28-year-old has built a decorated career, amassing four golds, one silver, and four bronze medals across various major competitions. These include the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Islamic Solidarity Games, South Asian Games, and the Asian U20 Championships.

Words of Gratitude and Motivation

Reacting to the honour, Arshad posted on his official X account (formerly Twitter):
“Honoured to receive the ‘best male athlete of Asia’ award by Asian Athletics. I am humbled and recharged to give better performances.” In a later statement, he expressed hope that his success would inspire Pakistan’s youth: “I want young people to believe that with dedication and hard work, nothing is impossible.”
