Deadly Clashes Continue as Pakistan Afghanistan Friendship Gate Destroyed at Chaman-Spin Boldak

Diplomatic Freeze Deepens: Pakistan and Afghanistan Exchange Heavy Fire Amid Mediation Efforts

The spokesman for the Taliban government in Afghanistan, Zabiullah Mujahid, has claimed that at least 12 Afghan civilians have been killed and more than 100 injured in the latest clashes following the attack from the Pakistan Army with light and heavy weaponry in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province on Tuesday.

Pakistan state television, PTV, earlier claimed that the recent border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan began on Tuesday evening when Afghan Taliban and TTP opened unprovoked firing across the border into Pakistan’s Kurram district, prompting the Pakistan Army to target and destroy Taliban posts and a TTP training camp in retaliation.

While Zabiullah Mujahid claims that the action taken by Pakistan in Spin Boldak forced Afghan forces to retaliate. The Afghan Taliban claims to have killed several Pakistani soldiers in retaliatory actions. They argue that Pakistani posts were also captured and weapons seized. Pakistan has not yet formally provided details of the ongoing operation in Spin Boldak. According to Afghanistan’s Tolo News, a doctor at Spin Boldak Hospital claims that the clashes began around 4 am, when 90% of the dead were civilians.

He added that 80 injured people were brought to the hospital, of whom at least 10 people have died, while many injured are undergoing treatment. He said that there are civilian populations on both sides of the area that are being targeted. Head of the Information Department, Spin Boldak, said that light and heavy weaponry are being used in these clashes. As of now, all diplomatic and economic relations are being suspended between Islamabad and Kabul.

Forward has passed since the closure of key trade crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and concerns are growing over the serious impact on trade and economic activities between the two countries.

According to some reports, the Friendship Gate, which is the official border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan from Chaman in Pakistan’s Balochistan, has also been blown up, allegedly by the Afghan Taliban.

According to Pakistan’s state television, the Afghan post suffered heavy damage during Pakistan, Afghanistan clashes, and a tank caught fire after being hit by Taliban fighters fleeing their post after Pakistan gave a heavy response to the unprovoked attack from Afghanistan. On Tuesday, Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch gave a comprehensive briefing to the Resident Ambassadors in Islamabad on recent developments along the Pak-Afghan border. The Pakistani side confirmed the 23 casualties on their side and shared information about more than 200 claimed deaths on their side.

Pakistan has conveyed a message that Pakistan will do whatever it has to protect its soil and people, and while it wants trade and connectivity, security is paramount. It will continue with refugee repatriation, and borders will remain closed till further notice. Pakistan is currently under attack from Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, Afghan forces, and Afghan Taliban.

In the latest reports from Pakistan, at least three Afghan Taliban border posts were targeted in aerial strikes, reportedly carried out by Pakistani drones. While local sources confirm the strikes, there has been no official acknowledgment from Islamabad.

Meanwhile, calls for dialogue and mediation between Pakistan and Afghanistan are growing to de-escalate the ongoing border conflict. A jirga from Pakistan’s Khyber region in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province recently met with members of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), urging them to withdraw peacefully from the area. Negotiations between the two sides are said to be ongoing in an attempt to restore stability along the frontier.
