Direct Dubai-Skardu flights return as Pakistan eyes tourists

PIA resumes direct Dubai to Skardu flights, cutting travel time and boosting tourism to Pakistan’s scenic and remote northern region.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has resumed direct flights from Dubai to Skardu, with the inaugural flight taking off on Friday, May 30, 2025. The development marks a significant milestone in promoting tourism to Pakistan’s scenic northern regions and enhancing air connectivity between the UAE and Pakistan.

The seasonal route offers a vital travel link for both expatriates and international tourists eager to explore Gilgit-Baltistan’s untouched natural beauty, including the dramatic mountain landscapes of Skardu. The area, located roughly 570 kilometers north of Islamabad, is home to iconic peaks such as K2, tranquil valleys, and unique cold deserts.

Launch Ceremony in Dubai

To celebrate the relaunch, a ceremony was held at the PIA office in Dubai, attended by H.E. Hussain Muhammad, Pakistan’s Consul General, and PIA’s Regional Manager, Sarmad Aizaz. A cake-cutting event marked the occasion, with members of a foreign tourist group also present. The group later boarded the inaugural flight, signaling growing international interest in Pakistan’s northern tourism sector.

“This flight not only facilitates Pakistani expatriates but also opens the doors for more than 200 nationalities living in the UAE to discover the untouched beauty of Skardu and Gilgit-Baltistan,” said the Consul General. His remarks highlighted the route’s broader impact beyond national borders, underscoring its role in regional tourism and diplomatic outreach.

Travel Time Cut from 20 Hours to Under 3

Skardu is traditionally accessed by road via the Karakoram Highway, a journey that can take over 20 hours. The new direct flight reduces this to under three hours, making travel significantly more convenient. This shorter route is especially attractive to Gulf residents seeking a summer escape, as temperatures in Gilgit-Baltistan often stay below 20°C.

In addition to the summer appeal, the region offers unique winter experiences, including cold desert safaris and panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. Tourism officials and airline representatives are optimistic that the ease of access will translate into a noticeable uptick in foreign and domestic tourist arrivals.

The Dubai-Skardu route is part of PIA’s broader strategy to expand its international footprint. The national carrier recently announced a new direct flight route from Lahore to Paris, beginning June 18, 2025. This comes in addition to the two weekly flights already operating between Islamabad and the French capital. According to PIA officials, the launch of new routes is designed to provide greater convenience to passengers, boost tourism, and increase foreign exchange earnings through improved connectivity.
