Explosions and Gunfire Rock Capital Kabul, Afghanistan

Widespread panic grips Kabul as multiple explosions echo through the city on Friday night.

A series of explosions and gunfire has rocked Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, late Friday night, local media and witnesses report. Several videos and images of explosions across Afghanistan have been circulating on social media since Friday night.

The cause of the explosion early on Friday and the possibility of casualties remain unclear. However, local social media reported potential airstrikes by an unidentified and unmanned aircraft.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, said that the sound of an explosion was heard in Kabul, and an investigation is underway. Zabihullah Mujahid added that details about possible casualties or damages from the explosion have not yet been released.

The explosion occurred as Afghanistan’s foreign minister was visiting India for a week-long trip aiming to foster economic ties with New Delhi in the first such visit by a leader of the group since its ceasefire in 2021.

However, the unconfirmed reports on social media claim that Pakistan allegedly initiated strikes on the terrorist TTP hideouts in Afghanistan; however, official confirmation on the circumstances required is awaited from both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

However, Pakistan’s Defence Minister on Thursday had claimed that the Afghan Interim Administration had asked for money from Islamabad to relocate terrorists of Tehreek-e-Taliban, Pakistan, a conglomerate of several other groups, away from its border.

Speaking at the National Assembly, Asif accused the Interim Afghan Administration of supporting the TTP groups against Pakistan by providing safe havens inside their country. A series of terrorist attacks had claimed the lives of more than 12 Pakistani soldiers in the past few days in Pakistan’s northwestern province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The Defense Minister is referring to his visit to Kabul in February 2023, along with Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmed Anjum, the then-head of the country’s premier intelligence agency, the ISI, where he met with Acting Deputy Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and other officials in Kabul.

“Now, we are sending a delegation to Kabul in the next two or three days to deliver a clear message to them (interim administration) that we will not tolerate these attacks and those who shelter and support these terrorists anymore,” he said, adding: “The patience of the government of Pakistan and the armed forces has now reached its limit,” said Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khwaja Asif.
