In a statement, the military’s media affair wing said that the process of Field General Court Martial (FGMC) was initiated against Faiz Hameed on August 12, 2014, under provisions of the Pakistan Army Act. The trial lasted for over 15 months. The military media said the accused was tried on four charges including-engaging in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act. FGCM complied with all the legal provisions and was according to section 133B of Army Act.
“The accused was tried on four charges related to engaging in political activities, violation of the Official Secret Act detrimental to safety and interest of the state, misuse of authority and government resources and causing wrongful loss to persons.
“After lengthy and laborious legal proceedings, the accused has been found guilty on all charges and sentenced to 14 years rigorous imprisonment,” ISPR said.
Earlier, the current ISPR Director General, Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhary said in response to a question about Faiz Hameed that legal proceedings were ongoing and would come to a logical conclusion. Hameed was taken into custody in August 2024 as the military announced the initiation of FGCM proceeding against him. The move was taken after allegations of misconduct leveled against him by a private housing society.
ISPR also said that the “involvement of convict (Hameed) in fomenting vested political agitation and instability in cohorts with political elements and in certain other matters is separately being dealt with”.
In December 2024, military court indicted Faiz Hameed on three accusations including engaging in political activities, violating anti-spy laws and abusing his authority. On May 9, 2023, violent protests were witnessed across the country following the arrest of former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan during which military installations were also vandalized.
“The Field General Court Martial complied with all legal provisions. The accused was afforded all legal rights, including the right to a defence team of his choice,” the statement said.
