U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that India and Pakistan were on the brink of nuclear war during a military standoff in May this year. He reiterated that the tariffs played a crucial role in preventing a nuclear war between the two South Asian neighbors during Sunday’s interview on CBS News’ 60 Minutes.
He added that he warned both countries that America would cancel their trade with them if they did not de-escalate.
“India was going to have a nuclear war with Pakistan. The Prime Minister of Pakistan stood up…if Donald Trump didn’t get involved, many millions of people would have been dead. It was a bad war. Aeroplanes were shot down all over the place. I told both of them, if you guys don’t stop, you will not do any business with the United States,” Trump said in an interview.
Donald Trump reaffirmed his role in defusing the military conflict between Pakistan and India during his interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes on Sunday.
In the same interview, he also mentioned that Pakistan is among the several countries that are actively testing their nuclear weapons in his latest interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes.
He made these shocking revelations in response to a question on Trump’s recent announcement of the US resuming testing of nuclear weapons after more than 30 years. While justifying the decision, he said that all the major countries, including China, Russia, North Korea, and Pakistan, are conducting tests while the United States has refrained from doing so.
“Russia is testing, and China is testing — but they don’t talk about it. We are an open society. We are different. We talk about it because otherwise you people are going to report,” Trump said.
His statement came at a time when India is conducting a tri-military exercise near the Pakistan border.
India kicked off its 12-day tri-services military exercise named Trishul close to the Pakistan border on October 30th.
The military exercises come months after India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’- an alleged counter-terrorism operation against Pakistan in May 2025. Trishul- the large-scale military exercises in November 2025 signal towards New Delhi’s ambitions to take Operation Sindoor 2.0 against Pakistan in the near future.

According to Indian media reports, Indian armed forces will be deploying special forces, commandos, missiles, batteries, warships, battle tanks, and attack aircraft, including the Rafale and Sukhoi Su-30.
Armed forces will be conducting the simulated offensive strikes to test the Forces’ readiness. All these developments point towards India’s intention and anticipation of a full-scale war against Pakistan in the coming days.
Other than Rafales and Sukhoi-30MKIs, special aircraft, helicopters, remotely piloted aircraft, and force enablers like IL-78 mid-air refuelers, and airborne early warning and control aircraft are also part of these military exercises. The Navy has also deployed some frigates and destroyers off the Gujarat coast.
