Pakistan Air Force Demonstrates Unmatched Skill and Reach in Bilateral Exercise Journey to Azerbaijan

In a remarkable operational feat, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) jets JF-17 completed a non-stop flight from Pakistan to Azerbaijan, supported by a mid-air refueling operation using the PAF’s own IL-78 aerial tanker.

The PAF contingent, led by its latest JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets and supported by air and ground crews, arrived in Azerbaijan on Sunday, October 19, 2024, to take part in a bilateral air combat exercise named Indus Shield Alpha, reports inform the military media wing, ISPR.

The Inter-Services Public Relations said the exercise is designed to enhance tactical coordination, mutual understanding, and interoperability between the air forces of Pakistan and Azerbaijan. The exercise will focus on advanced aerial warfare strategies, joint mission planning, and modern air power challenges driven by evolving technologies.

The drills also aim to foster strategic cooperation and strengthen regional defence ties. The PAF’s participation reflects its broader commitment to regional stability and international military cooperation while showcasing Pakistan’s expanding air combat capabilities and global strategic outreach.

“The intricate mid-air refuelling operation, executed with utmost precision by PAF’s own IL-78 aerial tanker, reaffirmed the long-range capability of PAF fighter jets and showcased the professional excellence and preparedness of PAF aircrew to undertake extended international deployments.”

The drill will also serve as a platform to exchange operational insights and fortify collaborative responses to emerging aerial defense challenges.

The statement continued: “The participation of the Pakistan Air Force contingent in Exercise Indus Shield Alpha reaffirms PAF’s enduring commitment to regional stability and global military cooperation.

“It also demonstrates PAF’s unwavering resolve to continuously evolve and adapt to the demands of contemporary warfare, while maintaining its tradition of excellence in every domain of air operations.”

Pakistan Air Force (PAF) aircraft have captured two honors at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2025, one of the world’s largest military airshows held from July 18 to 20th. PAF’s historic C-130A Circuitous Transport Aircraft impressed judges with its presentation and design, earning the highly coveted Conqueror’s Delegates Trophy.

In addition, the advanced JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jet of the PAF won the Spirit of the Meat Trophy, awarded for its striking delivery and remarkable performance, including a non-stop flight, featuring mid-air refueling, earning praise for showcasing Pakistan’s best air capabilities.

The event spotlighted PAF’s role as a leader in multi-domain operations and defense collaborations. With its participation in Indus Shield Alpha, Pakistan Air Force has reaffirmed its commitment to operational excellence, innovation, and strategic partnerships across the globe.

In May 2025, Pakistan’s PAF stood out with its exceptional performance against the Indian Air Force by downing six confirmed Indian jets during the May 9 and 10 aerial standoff. PAF also played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s retaliatory Operation called Banyan-ul-Marsus, in which PAF jets hit key military sites in India.
