Pakistani cricketer Haider Ali cleared in UK sexual assault case

Haider Ali, provisionally suspended during the investigation, is now free to leave the UK after Greater Manchester Police found insufficient evidence. Questions remain about his return to the national team amid PCB’s strict player conduct rules.

Pakistani cricketer Haider Ali has been cleared in an alleged sexual assault case after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) UK determined there was insufficient evidence to proceed. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) also confirmed to Pakistani media that the case against Ali has been closed.

Ali, 24, was represented by leading criminal law barrister Mohin Khan during the investigation. He had been under inquiry after a British woman accused him of sexually assaulting her at a Manchester hotel. According to police reports, the woman first met Ali on July 23, 2025, in Manchester, and they met again on August 1 in Ashford, Kent. She filed her complaint on August 4, roughly two weeks after their first meeting.

That same day, Ali was arrested by Kent police officers at the Spitfire County Ground in Canterbury, where he was taken into custody from the players’ canteen and transferred to Canterbury Police Station. During questioning, Ali strongly denied the allegations, stating that he knew the woman personally and considered her a friend. He described the accusations as a “complete shock.”

Following the closure of the case, police sources told EU News that Ali has collected his passport from authorities and is free to leave the UK at any time.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had provisionally suspended Ali during the course of the investigation. Ali, who made his international debut in 2020, has since represented Pakistan in 35 T20 internationals and two ODIs.

The PCB, however, is yet to state its clearance in the case and regarding his future in Pakistan cricket. PCB has been very strict regarding the code and regarding the conduct of its players since the mega spot fixing scandal that included three key cricketers from Pakistan, including the captain, Salman Butt, Muhammad Amir, and Muhammad Asif. Although Haider Ali is not part of the team right now, the question regarding the certainty regarding his future remains.
