PTI Tensions Ease as Uzma Khan Finally Allowed to Meet Imran at Adiala Jail

Uzma Khan confirmed that Imran Khan is in good health after meeting him at Adiala Jail, ending weeks of speculation about his condition. Authorities, however, continue to enforce strict security and restrict visits despite court orders.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan is in good health, his sister Uzma Khan said on Tuesday after meeting him at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail — a development that finally dispelled weeks of speculation about the former prime minister’s condition.

Speaking to reporters outside the jail, Uzma said she would share a detailed update after consulting her sisters Aleema Khan and Noreen Khan. Her meeting was allowed shortly after authorities granted permission, following repeated complaints by PTI leaders and Khan’s family that they had been denied access despite court orders.

PTI had warned it would stage a protest outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and then march toward the jail to demand access, but officials insisted visits had been restricted under jail rules for the security of both Khan and other inmates. They also accused visitors of discussing political matters with Khan.

Uzma told journalists that although Imran Khan was in good health, he had been barred from meeting anyone for the past four weeks. She further alleged that Bushra Bibi was being held in solitary confinement. She added that lawyers Hamid Khan and Salman Akram Raja would oversee bar council election nominations, and called for the issuance of notifications confirming Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir as opposition leaders in the National Assembly and Senate.

She also said KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi enjoyed Imran Khan’s full confidence, accusing authorities of selectively applying the law only to PTI.

Aleema Khan, meanwhile, said the family’s position was that six family members should be allowed to meet Khan every Tuesday and six PTI leaders every Thursday — rights she said were supported by existing court orders.

Ahead of the planned protest, Islamabad and Rawalpindi administrations imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings in both cities. Tensions had escalated last month when CM Sohail Afridi was denied a meeting with Khan for the eighth time, despite holding a 16-hour sit-in, prompting PTI to announce nationwide protests.

Imran Khan has been imprisoned at Adiala Jail since August 2023, following his ouster through a no-confidence vote in April 2022.

Speaking earlier at Factory Naka, Aleema criticised what she described as excessive security arrangements and claimed her brother had been kept in solitary confinement for a month. She alleged that police had even “left dirty water on the road” and accused the government of being “afraid of a simple family visit.” She added that authorities were uneasy about Noreen Khan’s interview with Indian media but vowed to raise their concerns internationally.

Khan’s sons have also expressed fears that officials may be hiding “something irreversible” about his health after more than three weeks without any confirmed information. Kasim Khan told Reuters that despite weekly meeting rights granted by court, the family had no direct contact for weeks, fuelling speculation about either a transfer to another location or a decline in his health.

Heightened security

Security around Adiala Jail has been tightened, with five extra checkpoints installed on Adiala Road under a special security plan. More than 700 police personnel — including women officers and anti-riot units — have been deployed, and vehicles are only allowed through after strict checking. Authorities warned that Section 144 remains in effect in Islamabad, with immediate action promised against any unlawful gatherings.

Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Hasan Waqar Cheema has also imposed Section 144 in the city from December 1 to 3.
