Shehbaz Sharif credits himself for promotion of COAS Asim Munir as Field Marshal

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has credited himself for promoting Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Asim Munir, to the highest military rank- Field Marshal. He said the decision was taken to recognize his role in defending the country during the recent military escalation with India, earlier this month.

In recognition of his exceptional leadership during Pakistan’s recent military clashes with India and the successful execution of “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos”, the federal government elevated General Munir to the rank of field marshal.

During a conversation with senior journalists, the prime minister said that he does consult his elder brother and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif on such crucial decisions.

Shehbaz Sharif emphasised that war is not the permanent solution to any problem. “Only lasting peace can guarantee a secure future,” said Shehbaz Sharif.

Regarding the talks with New Delhi, Shehbaz Sharif said, the premier said that whenever discussions on terrorism take place, they will be held by the national security advisers of both countries.

He asserted that so far, India has not agreed to engage in talks with any third country. “During the war, Israel extensively supported India,” he claimed, adding that Indian forces in Srinagar and other locations used Israeli weapons.

He said Pakistan would raise four points with India-Kashmir, trade, war, and terrorism in talks with India.

The recent escalation between Pakistan and India was triggered by last month’s attack on tourists in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir’s (IIOJK) Pahalgam. In the aftermath, Pakistan undertook a large-scale retaliatory operation against Indian military targets. Following a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a government statement read:

“The Government of Pakistan has approved the promotion of General Syed Asim Munir (Nishan-i-Imtiaz Military) to the rank of Field Marshal for safeguarding national security and leading the military to victory through strategic acumen and resolute leadership during Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos.”
