Squid Game Final Season Smashes Netflix Viewing Records

The final season of Squid Game has set a new Netflix record with over 60 million views in just three days.

The third and final season of the hit Korean series Squid Game has shattered records to become Netflix’s biggest-ever TV launch.

In its first three days, the season amassed over 60.1 million views and more than 368.4 million hours watched — setting a new benchmark for the streaming giant. For comparison, the second season debuted with 68 million views over a four-day period last December.

The latest season has already secured its place as the ninth most-watched non-English-language season on Netflix, with the first and second seasons holding the top two spots.

Critical reception has ranged from mixed to positive. The Guardian’s Rebecca Nicholson noted that it’s “nowhere near as pointed as it was” in earlier seasons.

Although this is said to be the final season, rumors suggest that David Fincher is developing an English-language remake for Netflix. Fincher, who previously collaborated with the platform on House of Cards, Mank, and The Killer, is also set to direct a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood based on a Quentin Tarantino script.

Netflix has already tasted success with its competition spin-off Squid Game: The Challenge, which has a second season in the works.

When asked about potential future Squid Game projects, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Variety he hasn’t received any official word on a remake.

“If they wanted to do another season, I think it’s clear I’d need to be involved and take the lead,” Hwang said. “But if it’s a U.S. version they’re making, I think sharing ideas would be enough. I don’t intend to be fully hands-on with something like that. That said, if Netflix asks and I feel my input is needed, and it doesn’t interfere with other work I’m doing at the time, I’d be happy to contribute as required.”
