PayPal Paves the Way for Pakistani Freelancers
In a groundbreaking move, PayPal has announced that Pakistani online freelancers will now be able to receive remittances from third parties without the need to create a PayPal wallet. This significant development comes as a result of a tri-party agreement that aims to streamline the payment process for freelancers in Pakistan.
The news was revealed by Dr Umar Saif, caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications, who emphasized the importance of this new system during his remarks. The ultimate goal of this collaboration is to enable foreign clients to pay Pakistani freelancers through a third-party digital wallet rather than requiring them to use PayPal directly.
Under this new remittance process, freelancers will have their dollars converted into Pakistani currency and the credit will be instantly applied to their bank accounts through an international remittance mechanism. This simplified method will greatly benefit freelancers by eliminating the need for them to go through the complex process of creating and managing a PayPal wallet.
Dr Saif further explained that the new regime implemented by PayPal and the State Bank of Pakistan will allow freelancers to open bank accounts based on their digital wallets. This will give them the opportunity to receive debit cards and create dollar accounts, enabling them and their families to freely transfer their earnings between different bank accounts. This added convenience is expected to boost efficiency and facilitate seamless financial transactions for Pakistani freelancers.
To become registered with the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) and gain access to these services, freelancers will only need to pay a minimal tax of 0.25 percent on their regular gross income. This incentivizes freelancers to formalize their work and take advantage of the benefits offered by this new system.
Dr Saif also highlighted that this development aligns with Pakistan’s broader plans to leverage the earning potential of its online freelancers. The country aims to establish 10,000 e-rozgaar centers to further support and empower freelancers in their digital careers. With PayPal’s new remittance process in place, Pakistan can truly harness the potential of its freelancers and propel its digital economy forward.
