The Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology: A Square Peg in the EV World

Mercedes-Benz has introduced its first electric vehicle (EV) in the form of the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology, a fully electric version of its iconic G-wagen. Despite its transition to an electric powertrain, the G-wagen retains its square shape and strong proportions that have made it stand out for the past 45 years. The EV version features a slightly raised hood, slots in the rear wheel arches for improved airflow, silver “EQ” badges, and a spoiler on the rear edge of the roof. Additionally, it has a branded storage box for charging cables in the rear.

Underneath its rugged exterior, the G580 maintains its tried-and-true ladder frame and independent front suspension, along with a solid rear axle. The frame has been reinforced to support the electric elements, and the lithium-ion battery, with a usable capacity of 116.0 kWh, is integrated into the frame to keep weight low. This battery provides an estimated range of 240 miles, making the G580 a viable option for both on-road and off-road adventures.

Powering the G580 are four individual motors – two in the front and two in the rear – making a total of 579 horsepower and 859 pound-feet of torque. This setup allows for true four-wheel drive capabilities and enables the G-wagen to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.6 seconds. The top speed is limited to 112 mph, ensuring optimal safety and control for such a heavy and uniquely shaped vehicle.

Charging the G580 is made convenient with options for both Level 2 AC charging and Level 3 DC fast-charging. The vehicle can charge at up to 11 kW on Level 2 AC current or a maximum of 200 kW at a Level 3 DC fast-charger. Mercedes claims that the battery can go from 10 to 80 percent in just over half an hour when using a Level 3 charger. Additionally, the G580 comes with preset charging programs that can adjust climate control and charge level based on location, optimizing charging efficiency.

While the G580 is known for its off-road capabilities, the electric version does not disappoint. The torquey motors deliver ample power for steep hills and sandy terrains, and the selectable low-range gearing – a first for an EV – unlocks the G-steering function, allowing the G-wagen to rotate around its own axis. It also offers off-road crawl functionality, a fording depth of 33.5 inches (deeper than the ICE G-wagen), electronic torque vectoring, and virtual differential locking on each wheel for better traction in off-road situations.

The interior of the G580 combines ruggedness with comfort and luxury. Open-pore walnut, a nappa-leather-covered steering wheel, ambient lighting, and leather upholstery come standard. The Mercedes MBUX infotainment system includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen and voice recognition, and it supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. One notable feature is the MBUX augmented reality navigation, which superimposes directions on the camera images in real time, making navigation more intuitive and user-friendly.

Customers have various options for customization, or they can opt for the special Edition One model priced at $180,000. The Edition One features unique colors, a blue trim strip, blue brake calipers, a body-color cargo box, and special projection light messages upon opening the door. It also includes all the features of the AMG Line and Night package.

Overall, the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology combines the ruggedness and off-road capability of the G-wagen with the efficiency and performance of an electric powertrain. It offers a range of 240 miles, four-wheel drive with four individual motors, and advanced off-road features. Inside, it provides a comfortable and luxurious cabin with modern technology and customization options. The G580 is a testament to Mercedes’ commitment to embracing new technology while staying true to its iconic design and heritage.
