TikTok Introduces Data Portability API Ahead of Europe’s DMA Deadline

TikTok, one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, is taking steps to comply with new European regulations aimed at curbing the dominance of Big Tech. The European Union (EU) designated TikTok’s parent company, Bytedance, as a “gatekeeper” along with five other tech giants including Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft. While TikTok disputes this classification and argues that it is a challenger rather than an incumbent, it must still adhere to the obligations set out in the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which will come into effect after March 6.

One of the key aspects of the DMA regulations is data portability and interoperability. Tech companies have been preparing for this for years, and TikTok has already allowed users to download their posts and request a copy of their data for use on other platforms. However, this process was static and did not account for the dynamic nature of data. To address this limitation, TikTok has introduced a data portability API.

The data portability API enables third-party developers to create conduits for data to flow from TikTok to their own apps, with the user’s authorization. This API can be configured for one-time or recurring transfers and aims to counter the traditional “walled garden” approach often associated with social networks. Developers can request access to all available data or specific categories such as TikTok posts, profile data, activity, and direct messages (DMs).

While the data portability API is open to global applicants, developers must demonstrate a well-defined use case before their request is approved. Additionally, the API is only applicable to users in the European Economic Area (EEA), so developers must be able to differentiate their market segments regionally.

In addition to the data portability API, TikTok is also refreshing its main “download your data” tool. Users will now have the option to choose which categories of data they want to download, such as DMs or posts. This update will initially be available in the EEA but will eventually be rolled out globally.

TikTok’s efforts to comply with the DMA regulations demonstrate its commitment to data portability and providing users with more control over their personal information. By introducing the data portability API and enhancing the “download your data” tool, TikTok aims to address the evolving needs of its users while complying with European regulations.

As the deadline for DMA compliance approaches, it will be interesting to see how other tech companies respond and whether they also embrace data portability and interoperability as essential components of their platforms. The regulatory landscape is evolving rapidly, and companies must adapt to meet the changing expectations of regulators and users alike.
