They’re Like Rats”: Jaya Bachchan’s Remarks Trigger Paparazzi Backlash and Boycott Calls

Jaya Bachchan’s harsh comments criticizing paparazzi and questioning their legitimacy have sparked a social media storm. In response, several photographers are considering a boycott, arguing her remarks demean hardworking professionals.

A recent interaction involving veteran actress and politician Jaya Bachchan has stirred a major controversy online after she made sharp remarks about paparazzi culture.

Speaking candidly, Jaya Bachchan said, “It’s strange. I am a product of the media, yet I have zero relationship with the paparazzi. Who are these people? Are they trained to represent the people of this country? You call them media? My father was a journalist — I have immense respect for real media professionals.” She went on to criticize their behavior and appearance, adding, “These men outside wearing drainpipe pants, holding mobile phones… they think that owning a phone gives them the right to take pictures and say whatever they want? The comments they make… what kind of people are they? They’re like rats.”

The comments have triggered a debate: Will the paparazzi boycott the actress?

One member of the paparazzi expressed disappointment, saying, “It’s unfortunate she said this. Her grandson Agastya’s film Ikkis is about to release — what if we choose not to cover its promotions? Amitabh ji greets fans outside his home every Sunday; it’s not mainstream media covering that, it’s us. She may feel we aren’t ‘media,’ but we are social media.”

Veteran photographer Varinder Chawla also responded, noting, “I’ve been in this profession for years and always respected celebrities’ wishes. Ranbir Kapoor asked us not to photograph Raha, and we complied. Same with Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone’s daughter.”

He further questioned whether Jaya Bachchan’s comments were aimed at professional photographers or a mix of YouTubers and fans. “One shouldn’t insult people like this. I told my colleagues we must maintain our self-respect — maybe it’s time we boycott her,” he added.
