Three Suicide Bombers Attack FC Headquarters in Peshawar, Killing Three Personnel

Militants storm the Frontier Constabulary headquarters during morning assembly, triggering a deadly firefight and multiple explosions.

Three suicide bombers targeted the headquarters of the Pakistani paramilitary force Frontier Constabulary (FC) on Monday, killing three personnel and wounding at least five, authorities said.

The attackers opened fire as they forced themselves into the headquarters of the frontier constabulary in Peshawar city before blowing themselves up inside the complex, police said.

The Frontier Constabulary Headquarters is on one of Peshawar’s busiest routes. The attack happened in the wee hours of Monday at 8 am. Video footage emerging on social media now shows one terrorist, draped in a chador, approaching the gate and detonating himself.

Three paramilitary personnel were killed, said Javed Iqbal, the deputy commandant of the force.

The headquarters of the force is located in a densely populated area of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

A few seconds later, two other terrorists tried to enter the compound. The attack occurred during the assembly, which was being held at the main compound. Peshawar Capital City Police Officer Dr. Mia Saeed Ahmed said the three FC men were martyred in the suicide attack at the gate, while two others were injured. A clearance operation is currently being carried out at the location.

The five wounded people, including two paramilitary personnel, were taken to Lady Reading Hospital, its spokesperson Mohammad Asim said.

According to the Pakistani media, the Jamaat-ul-Ahrar faction of band Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attack. The spokesman of the Lady Reading Hospital confirmed that at least 11 injured have been brought to the hospital, while one injured has been taken to the Khyber Teaching Hospital.

Islamist militants operating in the region have ramped up attacks in recent weeks after last month’s deadly border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Pakistan blames the Afghan Taliban for harbouring the militants who it says launch cross-border attacks, a charge Kabul denies.

President Asif Ali Zardari has also condemned the attack and has offered condolences to the families of the martyrs. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsen Naqvi has also issued a statement condemning the attack. He said that the sacrifices of the martyred person would always be remembered.

KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, in a statement, has paid tribute to the martyrs and security forces, stressing that such cowardly attacks cannot weaken morale. He affirmed that the provincial government is standing with the police and law enforcement agencies, adding that every resource available will be utilized to eliminate terrorism. He has also directed authorities to treat the injured and prayed for the families of the martyred.
