A British travel vlogger has unexpectedly become the chronicler of Nepal’s ongoing political turmoil.
Harry, who runs the YouTube channel Wehatethecold, is best known for his motorcycle travel vlogs. But his footage from the Gen Z-led protests in Kathmandu went viral, amassing more than 13 million views.
His journey, which began as a ride from Thailand to the UK, took an unforeseen turn when he reached Nepal, just as mass demonstrations erupted. The protests were triggered after the government banned 26 social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook.
Yet the unrest had deeper roots. Just weeks earlier, the “nepo kid” campaign had swept across Nepali social media, exposing the lavish lifestyles of politicians’ children and fueling resentment against the country’s elite. Even after the social media ban was lifted on September 8, protests continued with greater force.

The movement soon turned violent, leaving 19 people dead and hundreds injured. Stranded by curfew, Harry found himself caught in the unrest. Rather than retreating, he documented the chaos through his camera, capturing raw scenes that traditional media outlets had not shown.
His videos revealed parliament in flames, clashes between protesters and riot police, tear gas filling the streets, and even looting. His shocked, first-person narration — coughing through the smoke and admitting disbelief at what he was witnessing — gave the footage a gripping, viral edge. “I can’t believe my eyes right now,” he says as the parliament complex burns in the background.
Viewers praised his unfiltered reporting, dubbing him an “accidental conflict journalist.”

But his newfound fame has raised concerns. On Instagram, Harry admitted he was entangled in “a legal thing” and feared possible deportation. He also stressed that his intention was never political — he had simply offered a raw, on-the-ground perspective of events that culminated in the resignation of Nepal’s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli.
