Watch: Pakistani Woman’s Praise Leaves NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Emotional

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani became emotional during a one-on-one session after a Lahore-born Pakistani woman praised his empathy and compassionate leadership.

Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s first Muslim mayor, became visibly emotional during a heartfelt exchange with a Pakistani woman who praised his empathy and leadership, crediting him with fostering positive change across the city.

Samina, a Lahore native, met Mamdani during a one-on-one session titled “The Mayor Is Listening,” where she expressed deep appreciation for his compassionate approach to governance. Speaking in both Urdu and English, she read from prepared notes and apologised for her limited English before congratulating the mayor.

“Your empathy deserves to lead,” she said, thanking him for “creating softness in people’s hearts in a world where people are not united.” She urged him to remain “a light and a hope during this difficult time,” saying his leadership had restored optimism among New Yorkers.

Mamdani responded warmly in Urdu and grew emotional upon learning that Samina was from Lahore, recalling his own visit to the city. “I went to Lahore once — it’s a beautiful city,” he said, thanking her for her words and support.

Following the exchange, the mayor briefly stepped away before resuming his scheduled meetings.
